10. Huh?
Isn't it even more impressive that he did it at a prayer breakfast?

What's the problem here?

17. Whats impressive about talking about his family?
He didnt give any love to atheists - he said a parent was one. heh. The OP made it seem like something totally different.

My mother is a Christian. Is that me giving love to Christians? Too funny.

18. What's 'funny' is your reaction. I think it's great that he did what he did.

21. Incorrect
He addressed non-believers directly:

I raise this history because far too often, we have seen faith wielded as a tool to divide us from one another - as an excuse for prejudice and intolerance. Wars have been waged. Innocents have been slaughtered. For centuries, entire religions have been persecuted, all in the name of perceived righteousness.

There is no doubt that the very nature of faith means that some of our beliefs will never be the same. We read from different texts. We follow different edicts. We subscribe to different accounts of how we came to be here and where we’re going next – and some subscribe to no faith at all.

But no matter what we choose to believe, let us remember that there is no religion whose central tenet is hate. There is no God who condones taking the life of an innocent human being. This much we know...

but is really appreciated.

7. Here:
...
I was not raised in a particularly religious household. I had a father who was born a Muslim but became an atheist, grandparents who were non-practicing Methodists and Baptists, and a mother who was skeptical of organized religion, even as she was the kindest, most spiritual person I’ve ever known. She was the one who taught me as a child to love, and to understand, and to do unto others as I would want done.

I didn’t become a Christian until many years later, when I moved to the South Side of Chicago after college. It happened not because of indoctrination or a sudden revelation, but because I spent month after month working with church folks who simply wanted to help neighbors who were down on their luck – no matter what they looked like, or where they came from, or who they prayed to. It was on those streets, in those neighborhoods, that I first heard God’s spirit beckon me. It was there that I felt called to a higher purpose – His purpose.

Sorry about the site, but it is a full transcript. A good acknowledgement of his mother, I'd say.

11. To your statement, not believing in religion doesn't mean that you're an atheist.
Edited on Thu Feb-05-09 09:28 AM by OmmmSweetOmmm
Like his mother, I'm spiritual but I don't like organized religion.

23. I too, am like you
I used the word "atheist" and that was a mistake. I apologize.

However, so many of us that do not fit into religious norms, we're kind of used to being lumped together, don't you agree?

16. Obama is more Bush than Bush on destroying separation of church and state,

He is trying to funnel great amounts of taxpayer money to churches and other religions that work against the rights of women and others.

Is he following the path of Ortega in Nicaragua where the Left made a deal with the Catholic Church to ban abortion--woman are being imprisoned there and dying from lack of medical care because of Ortega's deal with the Catholic Church?

Churches, mosques, and other religious entities can do good works without federal government tax dollars underwriting attacks on the freedoms of our citizens. People of specific religions are also free to set up truly separate non-profits to do good works and apply for government money through these businesses.

This Faith-Based Office in Government was initiated by George Bush-it never existed before the Selected president got into office. It needs to be shut down now.
