Just heard Justice Ginsburg has pancreatic cancer, having surgery |
|
Edited on Thu Feb-05-09 01:34 PM by wildflower
Heard it on NPR. The NPR report said that they found it early, which means her chances are better. Usually they find pancreatic cancer late, which is why the 5-year survival rate is 5%. They're doing surgery to remove a 1-centimeter tumor (I previously misheard it as one inch). UPDATE: NPR link: http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=100290115(Previously I had this AP alert link: http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5ijDA5bgxiHlTvS_r-SSjskS1Tq1wD965IK501)

Not good at all.
My thoughts and prayers are with her and her family. I know how difficult a time it is.

5. Thanks! I searched DU for "Ginsburg" with no results |
|
Must have been right before that was posted. I'll put that MSNBC link in the OP.

Supposed to have been diagnosed last month, and in the early stage. My best friend was diagnosed, and was gone 2 weeks later.
It can be a very cruel disease. I wish her the best.

7. If it's pancreatic,that's the bad one.... |
|
The one that Killed DUer Andy Stephenson. The only real hope is an operation called the Whipple. Upside, I have a cousin in Maine who had the Whipple over 20 months ago, so there is hope.

9. If she's got a 1-inch tumor, the cancer's probably too advanced for us to be optimistic. |
|
I'm just heartsick about this.

15. The unvarnished truth is she is terminal. The only variant is how |
|
long her body can resist the progress of the disease. Survival with pancreatic cancer is so rare as to not even provide a useful statistic. Wish her well.
