Who should Obama name to the Supreme Court when it becomes necessary? |
|
I don't want to jump the gun but with the news of Ginsburg today and the fact that being able to appoint SCOTUS members is one of the most important things to come from Obama's election, I'm just curious who you'd like to see there?!?!?

60. I've long suggested Nadine Strossen as a replacement for Ginsberg when that day comes... |
|
it'd be the most interesting confirmation hearing for a while.
A former President of the ACLU who sits on the board of NORML, a feminist, an atheist, a staunch civil libertarian, a defender of free speech and the right to personal reproductive freedom, sits on the Council of Foreign Relations, is considered to be one of the great legal minds living today, has been recognized as one of the most influential lawyers in the US by the National Law Journal, the star of the faculty of one of the best law schools in America (NYU), is under 60 and a staunch critic of Bush DOJ legal policies and positions.
How are you going to argue that she unqualified if you're a Republican? She's on face-value more qualified than anybody that Bush nominated. The only thing she lacks is federal bench experience and that's made up for by the shear amount of time she's spent as a lawyer in front of the federal bench and SCOTUS.
She's in every way the perfect successor to Ruth Bader Ginsberg...who also gained prominence in the legal community as a hard-nosed unrelenting lawyer for the ACLU who asked sharp questions and cut opposing lawyers arguments to shreds.

She was a prosecutor before she did the show and she is sharp as a well honed tack. She's not like the other pathetic TV judges - like Judge Judy or that asshole guy in Chicago (can't remember his name). She catches everything and has an excellent liberal perspective on things. I love her - I think she'd be awesome. But unfortunately, no one would ever take her seriously because she's been on TV. Your comment is proof.

A liberal woman really should be his first appointment WHOMEVER he is replacing. It is disgraceful that there is only one woman on the Supreme Court, and, that of 9 Justices, only TWO women have ever served. Women are 51% of the population of the United States.

|
Hey, so I do not have a law degree, have never held an elected office and generally behave like a liberal version of the boorish Rethugs that drive me crazy.....BUT....I DID graduate from the same high school that gave us Chief Justice Roberts (much to my chagrin) and I believe it would only be fair to allow me to serve a counterweight to him on the SCOTUS!
And seriously, haven't we learned anything from the Republican playbook yet? Reagan? GWB? Palin? Sweet Jebus! I may lack credentials in some respects, but compared to the those three I look like an amalgam of Einstein, Newton and Copernicus!!!
How hard could it be really? Essentially my job would be to object to anything Roberts says and to rule opposite him and Scalia on every issue that requires it...I think we could have my 11-year old daughter perform that role!

by no means a liberal or even a left-leaning-moderate politically, is considered to be a legal centrist and holds her personal opinions way too close to the robe for my personal liking. I fear that she could be our Souter, who was appointed by G.H.W. Bush and was thought to be a marginal conservative during confirmation but votes a liberal POV 70% of the time.
Everything I fear can be summed up in the fact that supposedly G.W. Bush considered appointing Sotomayor for the seat currently held by Alito until it was made clear to him that the GOP party base and Congressional representation might revolt if he appointed anybody who refused to vocally-take a staunch pro-life position.
The last thing we need is a justice appointed by a Democrat who goes maverick and votes with the Scalia/Thomas/Alito block any appreciable % of the time.

61. I'd be asking the NAACP for recommendations --- |
|
and return to input from the ABA again ---
Bush's appointments were so vile they had to disconnect from ABA ---
vile and incompetent. In the case of Thomas, I'd say legally criminal and perverted.
Also women's groups ---
You don't have to be a lawyer to be on the SC -- and I think we probably have too many
lawyers now ---
Obviously, Barbara Jordan should have been Chief Justice!
We need strong advocates for women and Human Rights . . .
for Native Americans, African-Americans, Homosexuals, etal.
I'm at the moment really not familiar with current names.
There's a female judge in NYC -- Kaye?
I think Fine -- who appears on TV and is actually a Republican would be the least --
he's a strong supporter of Constitutional rights. Is for impeachment of Bush.
Turley? Is that the correct name? Appears on TV. Makes a lot of sense.
