3. Marijuana haters are just ignorant or illiterate, that's all...
I don't use marijuana and only have a drink now and then, but it's clear to anyone who lives on this planet that drinking is the biggest danger, yet it's marijuana that is illegal, while drinking is fully legal and allowed to continue being the cause of deadly accidents and murders. By mortality standards, liquor should be illegal.

Neither should be illegal, really, but if one is to compare, liquor is the bigger danger to humanity.

the XVIII Amendment prohibited manufacture, transportation, or sale of alcoholic beverages, but not the consumption of booze. I think that is why modern pot laws make it illegal for the individual to consume the stuff.

66. Speaking of PWS (piloting while stoned), while I was in Vietnam I was assigned to
an aviation battalion (helicopter unit). My unit's job was to provide coordination between the choppers and the units on the ground. We were on the ground with the grunts. They were in the air ferrying us in and out or providing air support, medevacs, etc.

Because I spent a lot of time with the pilots I was friends with a bunch of them, including some of the best slick and gunship pilots around. The gunship guys flew Cobras and C-model Hueys on every kind of mission imaginable, from close support of grunts in firefights, to escorting slicks into and out of LZ's (landing zones), to perimeter security around base camps. They did this day and night and were on call whenever the shit started happening.

Every gunship/Cobra pilot I knew and most of the slick pilots were stoners. We're talking about get up in the morning and burn one. And keep a buzz going all day and until bedtime.

I've seen these guys do rocket runs at night with pinpoint precision on VC that were twenty-five YARDS in front of our position. I've seen them doing acrobatic turns (aerial ballet is more like it) while maintaining continuous fire on enemy positions, usually in pairs, but sometimes three and four to a team. AND THEY WERE SMOKING SOME REALLY GOOD SHIT. Passing joints in the cockpit. Oh yeah.

So I don't worry so much about somebody who's stoned flying an aircraft that I"m in. Now, piloting while drinking, NO WAY.

I know that probably doesn't change your mind, roguevalley, but I love telling that story to the reefer-revilers.

And hey, I, like you, don't use anything except a glass of wine with dinner now and then. However, stats show that marijuana is not the drug that causes a monstrously high rate of murders, accidental deaths, car crashes, etc. That's all I'm saying. That in a test of which is bad, alcohol comes out on top and marijuana doesn't even come in second. And yet alcohol is QUITE legal.

13. You forgot the paper and fuel industries
Remember, it was Hearst who funded "Reefer Madness" and all the negative propaganda because he saw hemp as a threat to his huge forest holdings...supplying the material to make the paper that he used to print his propaganda. The oil companies aren't too fond of it either, since it can also provide a cheap and clean alternative to fossil fuels.

What I'm tired of is people asking to legalize it for medicinal purposes. Screw that, it's not what happened during the Prohibition. People weren't in the streets asking for medicinal alcohol. They were proud to want to get intoxicated.

11. Smokin' Gold
The Phelps incident, to me, is the greatest endorsement of this wonderful herb!
If a young man can perform to the ultra limit that Phelps has, and still enjoy a toke or two, then what does this say about the propaganda that is always thrown at marijuana?
In our nutsy society, Micheal Phelps could have drank himself sloppy and there would not have been any fallout (barring a DWI of course). But the lad takes a toke in the company of his peers and the Puritans get their panties all in knot.
Legalize It Now!

60. Those who are so terrified of marijuana would probably be very surprised
to discover how many sucessful people partake of the herb. I enjoyed mj for over 35 years on a daily basis (quit a few years ago due to drug testing at work) and managed to raise 4 children who are decent, hardworking members of society, went back to school for a 2 year degree and made the Dean's list each semester and worked full time at jobs that required a high level of accuracy and responsibility and have always had one of the lowest absentee rates among my coworkers. I know a great many people who have similar stories, many of them in professional fields.

The people I know who have really messed up their lives with chemicals did it with alcohol, meth, cocaine and prescription drugs. Go figure.

A 14 year old in my town just died because he stole his grandfather's pain medication and Overdosed. Children who cannot find a little herbal fun are instead huffing horrible chemicals. And meth! Yuck. Back in the day when pot was more easily obtained, kids didn't turn to these horrible alternatives. I think rather than being a gateway, it is the way, and the other real drugs with horrible side affects are more easily passed up.

Lots of my friends are like - "I don't care if it's legal, we get good quality shit all the time." This - right here - what they are doing to Phelps is why is MUST become legal. What they are doing to Phelps is an OUTRAGE. Is he not allowed a private life???? Are any of us? Do they well and truly own us 24/7 now? I read yesterday that he is considering NOT competing in the 2012 olympics because he can't even be himself anymore - always worried about what others might think, what pictures they might take of him, etc. We live in a country that actively causes harm to our own people, and evidently we're OK with that. But I work in a pediatric ICU and save children's lives. I have seen more kids die in a week than any person should see die in a lifetime. My job is high stress, and several coworkers and me have reminisced about the days before we had our jobs and degrees and liscensures... you could ease a little stress with a doobie before bed. However, I can longer partake in the one intoxicant I have ever truly enjoyed, and neither can my coworkers. But I digress... as Peter Tosh once sang "Legalize It".

45. I smoked pot for decades
Then quit 6 years ago. I still have occasional cravings for it, and went through a bit of withdrawal, even though I never was a chronic daily smoker. The THC content, with maybe the exception of hashish, is waaay higher now than it was when I first tried it in the late 60s. I wish that I never had smoked it to be honest, as it was, just like getting drunk, something that was fun to do while still a student, but after getting married and having children, it is "high" time to give up getting wasted, IMO. I do not have any children BTW.

Has anyone here seen hashish being sold in the past decade?

I am long outside of the illegal drug loop, and haven't smoked any of it in about 20 years.

Two different experiences, unless they are both done at the same time. Personally I preferred the pot over the alcohol, never felt like I was too impaired to drive a vehicle with just an MJ high, no matter how much of it I smoked at one time.

71. I hate ganja.
Before you jump all over me, I do believe it should be decriminalised. But ganja is not necessarily harmless. The teenagers who smoked ganja tended to be de motivated - they eventually gave up school work or anything of importance. This is not everyone of course, some people smoked and stopped and had no ill effects. Some people have precarious mental health which can be negatively affected by ganja.

Many people say you cannot get addicted to ganja - and obviously it is not in the same league as nicotine or cocaine. There are many people with a dependency on ganja however.

As for Phelps, I am glad he has not been harshly punished but he did screw up. He has a responsibility to the youngsters who look up to him and he let them down. My two pre teen daughters are just starting to swim competitively and I don't want them to think that ganja smoking is acceptable or "nothing serious". His apology is therefore very appropriate.

72. I disagree on a couple points.
The amotivational syndrome thing sounds suspiciously like government propoganda... which it is.

Prior to nursing school (which is when I pretty much dropped the habit) I would smoke while studying for my classes and immediately before tests. I was a straight A student. And not in easy classes. I'm talking Human Anatomy, Human Physiology, Chemistry, Microbiology, etc. In fact far from making me amotivational, I tended to get less bored with the task of studying, something that has always been difficult for me, and often found the content more interesting. I also tended to tune out distractions during tests. This was definitely not the case in nursing school, where I hated studying and got bored easily. Overall I was an outstanding student under the influence of marijuana and a mediocre one when I was straight.

And not saying one thing has to do with the other because I highly doubt smoke entering the lungs is beneficial to overall respiration and stamina, but as far as major damage goes, in physiology lab my professor told me I had the greatest lung capacity among all of his students that semester after a certain lab session which tested this value. Of course I did formally run cross country.

Of course I'm not suggesting your children smoke pot either. I have a daughter and prefer that she doesn't partake until adulthood.

73. Everybody is different.
Some people have no problems with ganja. The boys (especially the boys) I knew growing up who smoked regularly all went down the tubes. I am not talking about trying a joint once at a party. The ones who had to smoke every day "to relax" or "to reason". I am in the unofficial ganja capital of the World and it is shocking how dependent many people (mostly male ) are on ganja. (And as a side note can I just say that most Jamaicans do not smoke ganja - this is a stereotype that can be very annoying).

Every morning in my neighbourhood there is a group of young fellows in their late teens standing on the corner of the road, furiously kneading the vegetable matter in the palm of their hand, getting ready to roll their joint. They have been doing this for years. This scene is replicated all over this island. I am in favour of decriminalising all drugs. But I believe that public smoking and use should not be allowed because it can really destroy young minds.

74. I do agree with the public smoking thing is a no no unless perhaps
in designated areas.

Don't you think boys "go down the tubes" more regularly than girls anyways. Maybe those that smoke marijuana do because we make it illegal and thus relegate those that smoke as bad kids. People tend to emmulate the picture that is painted of them.

I am a male by the way, despite my chosen profession, and smoked marijuana at least on a weekly if not daily basis from the age of 13-24, save the 12 months I was on probation for possession of marijuana.

Although I agree that everybody is different, and my story doesn't match everybody else's. However, the amotivational syndrome thing is still a lie force fed to us by the american propoganda machine. And don't forget those that are classified as criminals based on a certain activity, or dress, or hair, or all of the above are more likely to act like criminals.

From my experience the ones that only smoked and rarely or never drank where ones with strong heads on their shoulders. Someone like me(Recovering alcoholic) I was in bad shape due to drinking. I put down the bottle and have been living a productive live even though I continued the ganja use.

THERE IS NO WAY IN HELL I COULD HAVE PASSED COLLEGE ALGEBRA WITHOUT IT!

I am motivated to do other tasks that are boring (like laundry) with a little buzz on.....too. The periods of my life when I wasn't smoking, are the times I have been the LAZIEST!

and I do respect your views on the subject.

I just don't believe that marijuana has anything to do with criminal activity other than it being labeled as criminal by most governments. And there are hundreds of thousands, if not millions of very successful people in the U.S. who smoke on a daily basis. I know dozens myself. I would be one if my job weren't so sensitive, more importantly my liscensure.

77. It has been a pleasure.
I have enjoyed our discussion. I agree that there is a lot of scaremongering. But ganja is a highly potent substance. I am only asking that people respect it and realise that it is not harmless or that it has no possible negative effect. The Doctors here have isolated an asthma drug from ganja (Canasol) and our grandmothers have been treating asthma with ganja tea for generations.Like all powerful things, it should not be abused. Know yourself. If you find you can't go a day without smoking, something is wrong.

The Rastafarians say it is a sacrament. This means it should be respected not abused.

The parents do. He needs to come out with a Barkley book "I'm not a role model" If the kids parents are good parents no need to worry about what Phelps does in his spare time, if the parents are abusive alcoholics then we should worry about them. If it was a video of him slamming shots no outrage, no one saying what about the kids!

Tobacco 435,000 Annual Deaths
Alcohol 85,000
Pot 0

Now you have to ask your self, why is something that kills ZERO people a year -personally I think we ought to give two or three a year automatically to the Darwin Awards, but facts are facts- illegal? What's the harm?

It's all a money game. DEA man get his money, government man get his money, local police man gets his money. They know it, and we know it.

81. The really annoying ones are the ones who smoke it

or used to smoke it, yet they still support its being illegal.

I know people from every walk of life who partake - doctors, lawyers, successful business owners. When SNL does their predictable "stoners are all unmotivated dumbasses" schtick I just cringe over the ignorance (don't watch SNL for that reason any more.) MJ use does not = unsuccessful life by any means - unless you get busted.

But when a user says "Oh, it's bullshit that you "need" it; haha it's not a medicine, man," I get pissed.

Personally, I have zero appetite. I can go days without eating. MJ helps me eat and keep the food down.

Fortunately, I can't afford smoke nor much food right now, so it's working out well. But then when I get skinny - as is happening - everyone jokes "Switch to meth?"

The true drug tragedy now is not even meth. It's hydros and oxys stolen by kids from Grandma's medicine cabinet. The pharms are the ultimate state-sponsored dealers, spewing out that shit like candy, subsidized by the government as our kids become more and more addicted. And while the little guy with one unprescribed pill can go to jail, the pharms are raking in the $$$$$$$$$$

Americans are, for the most part, idiots who love to control what "others" are doing while they themselves do the legal, but worse shit.

Thanks for this post :smoke:

110. My mom ended up being an unwitting pot grower once..
when my younger brother had a little plant growing in the kitchen window. He told our mom that it was a baby tomato plant.

She lovingly watered it and tended it like it was one of her own plants.

That was the big problem...

She is a known plant murderer. Not by choice...she's just not good with living things.

So she ended up killing it somehow and then felt all guilty that she had sentenced my brother's poor little "tomato plant" to such a horrible death.

My bro and I still laugh about it to this day

The govt talks of debt and all they have to do is decriminalize pot, grow it, cultivate it and sell it, taxing it like alcohol and tobacco, people will buy it legally, it wouldn't take long for the debt to go down just on the tax from the pot alone.
