I once defined Blue Dogs as being what used to be called
Rockefeller Republicans. It was pointed out to me that Nelson Rockefeller was probably more liberal than the Blue Dogs.

16. Barry was a true small government conservative
conservatives now aren't what they used to be. neo-cons are an odd bastardization of the conservative ideology.

47. Goldwater was never a religious goofball.
I think he had integrity.

I disagreed with most of what he stood for, especially his hard-line militarism ("Drop It!" in reference to nuclear weapons in VN) and his economic libertarianism, but he also has some social libertarian streaks I agreed with, and I thought he was an honest person.

18. Exactly. Social liberal
fiscal conservative.

There's sometimes a bit of a dichotomy there - being socially liberal means spending (tax) money on people who don't "deserve" it; so the fiscal conservative becomes schizophrenic trying to work out the details....... :P

...to quash progressive legislation.

The Progressive Caucus is the largest,
but they are outnumbered on the most
important business by the
coalition
of the Blue Dogs and New Dems.

17. Hey, There Once Were "Yellow Dog Democrats" Too! Anyone Care To Define Them
in today's terms?? Also, you might want to look into when Repukes became defined by the color Red, and the Democrats became Blue.

As a Boomer, I don't recall any of this stuff... only the "yellow dogs!"

And we could go further... DLC, DINO, Progressive, and something I relate... A LIBERAL, before Ronnie Ray-Guns made LIBERAL a dirty word. It's late, been a long day and I'm a bit ditzy, just thought I would chime in.

before he'd vote for a republican. I'm guessing that's what the old democrats used to adhere to. He was born in 1908 and lived through a lot politics in his day. I miss him but glad he raised me to be a good yellow dog democrat.

42. Given That You Live In Florida... You Must Remember When This State
was essentially "Yellow-Dog Democrat." I moved here in 1972 after I graduated from school, my husband was born in Tampa. If memory serves me right, Reuben Askew was Governor then, I could be wrong... I was young then.

I watched as time marched on to what this state has become today and UNFORTUNATELY live in probably the REDDEST County in the state or a very close 2nd! Sarasota, home of "Cruella" and many others! Also THE county that just re-elected the Supervisor of Elections that kinda/sorta lost 18,500 votes in 2006. And that wasn't the ONLY election that raised many questions. Even the election of Obama has been a source on wonder. It was said he won this county and we DID have a SURPRISING turn-out for him when he visited the city, plus a fantastic walk across the Ringling bridge that turned out almost 5,000 people. However, as the returns came in the figures noted he "won" the county, but in the end... so they configured, he actually "lost" by something like 112 votes!

Go figure!! This isn't a place for a Liberal like me, but I'm stuck here! We worked so hard to get her opponent elected and it looked good for a while, however she ended up winning by 65 plus percent. I DON'T believe she won by that much, but we've been fighting with this witch for too many years... she has tentacles that reach far and wide!!

but I'm stuck as well in NE FL. At least we can be proud of the work we did in turning our state blue again. Hope it sticks.:hi:

We don't really have a majority in the Senate because of the "Blue Dogs".

34. To bad Blue Dog Democrats aren't cute
like regular Blue Dogs.

If it weren't for the old Texas Yellow Dog Dems ("I'd vote for a yellow dog if he was a Democrat"), Blue Dogs wouldn't be called Blue Dogs at all. They'd be called what they are. Skunks, or maybe rats.

I can see why party purists are unhappy with them, but politics is more complicated than party doctrine.

I consider Blue Dogs just left of center.

His only value was getting rid of chalie taylor and helping attain a Dem majority.

On almost all of the important bills, he votes with the repukes.
