6. I do not qualify for the earned income tax credit so I paid.
Very few of us get away without paying income taxes. You have to be incredibly wealthy or incredibly poor to not pay.

10. I pay taxes every year
and I intend for the right amount to be taken out. Fortunately I usually get a little bit back when I file.

14. We are getting a refund of all the fed taxes witheld from hubby's
pay this year. He retired in October and we are both 65. Total income was close to $40,000, and I wouldn't call that incredibly poor nor incredibly wealthy! We are doing fine. We're both pretty frugal people and have been living on SS only since November, and intend to keep it that way. What fairly small savings we have will be kept for emergencies.

9. Should be getting a refund but the IRS has been in my shit ...
... for the past 4 years. Every November or so, I get a letter saying they've "refigured" my return and I now owe them X.

Its a fucking mind game and its getting really tiring. I hope the Obama Admin cleans house at the IRS.

11. I haven't filed yet, but my situation is about the same as last year
So I'll probably be getting some money back. Probably about $1,000.

12. Just found out we have to pay
Despite dumping tons of money into This Old Shithole (and it's nowhere near renovated--still ripped up), and purchasing two new computers that we really couldn't afford, I "made too much" with my freelancing gig ($6K whoopee) and now we owe federal. :grr: Getting a couple hundred back from the state. Again: whoopee.

13. Afraid to do it to find out i owe
we had to get money out of 401k last year. they took out 20% for taxes but it makes my income go up a level that might cause us to owe because of that.

17. remember to include the tax they took out under "taxes paid"
I also took money out of IRAs last year (ironically, to pay my taxes) and all 3 deducted taxes before sending me the difference.

In the end, my total income was more, but my total taxes paid was more, so it pretty much balanced out.

we will not get any refunds, only an IOU! Can be used as toilet paper is the good news.

21. I was born and raised in California. Glad I left in '81.
The only thing I miss, up here in the Pacific Northwest, is mockingbirds, mourning doves, and eucalyptus trees.

18. I'm self-employed, so I never get a refund, unless I pay too much in quarterly payments
. . . but that's not about to happen, because I'm always a little short on those quarterly payments and have to make it up at the end.

19. Getting a refund doesn't mean you didn't pay taxes
It just means you had more paid in than you actually owed.

20. People are always so happy to get a refund
but many of them never look at the 'taxes paid' line to see how much they left behind.

p.s. I've worked in public accounting since 1973.

25. THIS
it never ceases to amaze me how many people are actually HAPPY that they got a refund. All getting a refund means is that you made an interest-free loan to the government that year. I would personally be happiest writing a check for $999 on April 15th, because that would mean that I got the maximum use of my earnings that year.

22. Getting a refund because I overpaid, but that's a bad sign.
I pay estimated tax 4 times a year because I'm self-unemployed. I mean self-employed. I paid the estimated based on my 2007 tax. But I made a lot less in 2008 thus I overpaid. So I am getting a pretty good refund, but it's not that happy because of the fact that I made so much less in 2008.

23. MAYBE a little from the Earned Income Credit. Maybe.
The person I worked for didn't send me a W-2 OR a 1099. (Not sending a W-2 I could understand, since he never deducted anything.) Come Monday, I'm sending a fax to the office, requesting either, or, both, or SOMETHING (it's worth a couple hundred bucks to me, if the IRS agrees).

If he balks or refuses, fine (he's been known to play pretty fast and loose with taxes). I'll just send my thirteen pages of time worked, amounts owed, and amounts paid back to the IRS, along with a note stating that my employer for most of the year refused, and, by the way, here's their name, address, and phone number and I'm sure they'd be happy to hear from you.

And then we'll BOTH take our chances.
