Grammy Awards: Nominees for Song Of The Year-1969:
Nominees for Song Of The Year-1969:

Tom T. Hall for Harper Valley PTA performed by Jeannie C. Riley,

John Lennon & Paul McCartney for Hey Jude performed by The Beatles,

Bobby Russell for Honey performed by Bobby Goldsboro,

Paul Simon for Mrs. Robinson performed by Simon and Garfunkel

Bobby Russell for Little Green Apples performed by O. C. Smith

Bobby Russell for Little Green Apples performed by O. C. Smith was the winner.

I've always thought the Grammy Awards were stupid. It might have started here.

I'll never forgive or forget that Honey didn't win. :grr:

(Need I add:sarcasm: ?)

1. The Grammy's are about the most worthless award show possible.
I care about a show that gives an award to Britney Spears.

...even her being nominated makes the Grammys the worst awards ever.

14. One of my favorite Simpsons lines:
Homer Simpson: Oh why won't anyone give me an award?
Lisa Simpson: You won a Grammy.
Homer Simpson: I mean an award that's worth something.
(announcement on the bottom of the screen- Legal Disclaimer: Mr. Simpson's opinions do not reflect those of the producers, who don't consider the Grammy an award at all.)

19. How do you think I feel?
Edited on Sun Feb-08-09 02:27 PM by GReedDiamond
I've been a voting member for over 16 years, and my picks rarely come out on top.

However, beyond the awards show, NARAS (National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences) does do some pretty good work, for example, through the Grammy Foundation, funding music programs in schools ("Grammy In The Schools" - http://www.grammyintheschools.com) and MusiCares. To quote from the web site:
It is the mission of MusiCares to ensure that music people have a place to turn in times of financial, medical or personal crisis. Its primary purpose is to focus the attention and resources of the music industry on human services issues that directly impact the health and welfare of music people. (http://www.grammy.com/MusiCares/Client_Services)

On edit: I've known a couple musicians that received addiction treatment and their lives back on track thanks to MusiCares.

24. Usually my picks in the first round...
Edited on Sun Feb-08-09 04:09 PM by GReedDiamond
...what they call the "entry list," don't make it to nomination. For example, my band was on the entry list this year, but we didn't get nominated. Which is good, because, I'm certain the earth would have spun off its axis and plunged into the sun if we had been nominated for something.

The rules for voting: After the "General Field" (Song of the Year, Record of the Year, Best New Artist, etc) we may only vote in up to 8 other Fields out of many. We may pick any Fields we like and vote in any or all Categories within those Fields.

As far as those who are up for awards, in my chosen Fields, here are my faves:

GENERAL FIELD

Category 1: Record Of The Year
Please Read The Letter - Robert Plant & Alison Krauss
T Bone Burnett, producer; Mike Piersante, engineer/mixer

Category 2: Album Of The Year
Raising Sand - Robert Plant & Alison Krauss
T Bone Burnett, producer; Mike Piersante, engineer/mixer; Gavin Lurssen, mastering engineer

Category 3: Song Of The Year
Viva La Vida - Guy Berryman, Jonny Buckland, Will Champion & Chris Martin, songwriters Band: Coldplay (I'm not a big Coldplay fan, but the song is at least "listenable," and I like Brian Eno, their producer, quite a lot, so they get my vote.

Category 4: Best New Artist
Jonas Brothers (just kidding, didn't vote in this one)

ALL OTHER FIELDS

FIELD 1 - POP

Category 5: Best Female Pop Vocal Performance
So What - Pink

Category 6: Best Male Pop Vocal Performance
That Was Me - Paul McCartney (this was a tossup, anybody but Kid Rock, Paul won the toss)

Category 7: Best Pop Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocals
Waiting In The Weeds - Eagles (I'm actually not a big Eagles fan...oh well)

Category 8: Best Pop Collaboration With Vocals
Rich Woman - Robert Plant & Alison Krauss

Category 9: Best Pop Instrumental Performance
Love Appetite - Steve Cropper & Felix Cavaliere (a couple of old favorites)

(I'm passing on the Pop and Dance Music Categories, not my thing)

FIELD 4 - ROCK

Category 15: Best Solo Rock Vocal Performance
No Hidden path - Neil Young (gotta go with Neil)

Category 16: Best Rock Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocals
Sex on Fire - Kings of Leon (I like these guys a lot)

Category 17: Best Hard Rock Performance
Wax Simulacra - The Mars Volta (very intense live band, not your average everyday hard rock)

Category 18: Best Metal Performance
Psychosocial - Slipknot

Category 19: Best Rock Instrumental Performance
Peaches En Regalia - Zappa Plays Zappa Featuring Steve Vai & Napoleon Murphy Brock (Frank Lives!)

Category 20: Best Rock Song
I Will Possess Your Heart - Benjamin Gibbard, Nicholas Harmer, Jason McGerr & Christopher Walla, songwriters - band: Death Cab For Cutie (I like this particular song quite a bit)

Category 21: Best Rock Album
Only By The Night - Kings Of Leon

FIELD 5 - ALTERNATIVE

Category 22: Best Alternative Music Album
Narrow Stairs - Death Cab For Cutie

FIELD 13 - BLUES

Category 66: Best Traditional Blues Album
All Odds Against Me - John Lee Hooker Jr.

Category 67: Best Contemporary Blues Album
City That Care Forgot - Dr. John And The Lower 911

FIELD 14 - FOLK

Category 68: Best Traditional Folk Album
At 89 - Pete Seeger (his sister Peggy is up for a Grammy in this Category, too)

Category 69: Best Contemporary Folk/Americana Album
I, Flathead - Ry Cooder

Category 71: Best Hawaiian Music Album
The Spirit Of Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar - (Various Artists)
Daniel Ho, George Kahumoku, Jr., Dennis Kamakahi, Paul Konwiser & Wayne Wong, producers

FIELD 16 - WORLD MUSIC

Category 74: Best Traditional World Music Album
Dancing In The Light - Lakshmi Shankar

Category 75: Best Contemporary World Music Album
Global Drum Project - Mickey Hart, Zakir Hussain, Sikiru Adepoju & Giovanni Hidalgo

FIELD 19 - SPOKEN WORD

I Am America (And So Can You!) - Stephen Colbert (& Various Artists)

FIELD 20 - COMEDY

Category 80: Best Comedy Album
Songs Of The Bushmen - Harry Shearer

Those are my eight...and, contrary to what many think, there is some good stuff in there.

Edited to remove an unnecessary comment.

28. I love your pick for Female Pop
Pink is one of my favorites. I hope she wins. I was so surprised the Jonas Brothers were nominated for Best New Artist while Leona Lewis and Katy Perry weren't (I'm picking Duffy since I like her song Mercy). I'm hoping Leona wins Record of the Year for Bleeding Love since she got snubbed for Best New Artist.

29. I wouldn't be too surpised about anything that happens in the "Best New Artist" Category...
I was so surprised the Jonas Brothers were nominated for Best New Artist while Leona Lewis and Katy Perry weren't...

And in keeping with the spirit of The Starland Vocal Band, who, in 1976 brought us "Afternoon Delight," I predict a Jonas Bros win for Best New Artist.

Also, I wasn't really into this Kings of Leon album. I really prefer their first two that have much more of a punk feel to it. Gritty two-guitar rock and roll.

22. I'll have to disagree with you
I like Britney and think she deserved the Grammy...especially considering who she was nominated against. I think the fact that Beyonce has won 10 (yes, 10!!) Grammys has done the most damage to the Grammys reputation. Justin Timberlake being nominated twice for Best Album also doesn't do much for their credibility.

I don't agree with the Grammys much but I still watch. I'm an award show fan so I watch even if I disagree with the nominees or, in the case of the Oscars, haven't seen any of the nominees.

45. Britney is just one of many artists not worthy of recognition
When you compare the Grammys to the Oscars it's no comparison at all. There is a lot of great music out there by artists that will never get airplay that will never get best album nomination. I love watching the Oscars because even if a lot of the picks are political you'll still see some powerful films. That can barely be said for the Grammys.

44. I just heard Ryan Seacrest close his interview with "genius" Will.I.Am and LA mayor Vaillaraigosa...
by saying, "I'll see you for dinner soon, and I'll see you in the studio!" followed by big bro hug for Will.I.Am.

:puke:

These people actually think they're important. And even that they're "artists". It boggles the mind.

40. You've just solved a lifelong mystery of mine!
Edited on Sun Feb-08-09 05:43 PM by LeftishBrit
I heard that song "Watching Scotty Grow" as a child, and I misheard "B-R-L-F-Q spells mom and dad" as "FLQ, that's Mum and Dad!". Now, some of my family are Canadian, and I'd heard relatives talking about "the FLQ", the Front for the Liberation of Quebec, who had kidnapped someone from the government. I thought this was what the line was about, and couldn't fit it in with the rest of the song. Ah, now it's finally sorted out for me! Oh, and whatever the words, it's a crap song.

WATCHING SCOTTY GROW
(Mac Davis)

Bobby Goldsboro - 1971
O.C. Smith - 1971
Mac Davis - 1972

Also recorded by: Ray Conniff; Tony Mottola.

There he sits with a pen and a yellow pad
He's a handsome lad
That's my boy

B-R-L-F-Q spells Mom and Dad
That ain't too bad
That's my boy

You can have your TV and your nightclubs
You can have your drive-in picture shows
I'll sit here with my little man near, we'll listen to the radio
Bidin' my time and and watching Scotty grow

Makin' castles out of building blocks
And a cardboard box
That's my boy

Mickey Mouse says it's thirteen o'clock
Well, that's quite a shock
But that's my boy

In four short years I've gone from rags to riches
But what I did before that I don't know
Well you can let it rain on my windowpane, I got my own rainbow
And we're just sittin' here shinin' watching Scotty grow

Up on daddy's shoulders and off to bed
Old sleepy head
That's my boy

Got to have a drink of water and a story read
An old teddy bear named Fred
That's my boy

Well, what's that your say Momma, come on and keep your feet warm
Well save me a place, I'll be there in a minute or so
I'll think I'll stay right here and say a little prayer before I go
'Cause me and God are watching Scotty grow
Me and God watching are Scotty grow

(Transcribed from the Mac Davis
recording by Mel Priddle - April 2006)

15. This is the "award show" that gave its only "best hard rock/heavy metal" award to Jethro Tull. . .
which left the world to wonder, just how heavy is that flute?

(The next year, separate awards for hard rock & heavy metal were given, but the selection committee was forever shown to be out of touch with popular sentiment. . . to say nothing of the industry itself.)

33. All Along the watchtower was technically released by Bob Dylan in late 1967
Though not as a single. I think that might disqualify it for the 1968 Hendrix cover version.

34. DYK...
''When Dylan wrote this song, he was recovering from a motorcycle accident which had marked a shift in his career.<2> Members of his family commented on his reading the Bible on a daily basis.<3> Several critics have pointed out that Dylan's lyrics echo lines in the Book of Isaiah, Chapter 21, verses 5-9:

Prepare the table, watch in the watchtower, eat, drink: arise ye princes, and prepare the shield./For thus hath the Lord said unto me, Go set a watchman, let him declare what he seeth./And he saw a chariot with a couple of horsemen, a chariot of asses, and a chariot of camels; and he hearkened diligently with such heed./...And, behold, here cometh a chariot of men, with a couple of horsemen. And he answered and said, Babylon is fallen, is fallen, and all the graven images of her gods he hath broken unto the ground

................

Dylan first performed this song live on January 3, 1974, in Chicago on the opening night of his 'comeback tour'.<8> Michael Gray, in The Bob Dylan Encyclopedia, writes that this is the most often performed of all Dylan's songs. Gray writes that by the end of 2003, Dylan had performed this song in concert 1,393 times.''

41. It really just might be...
Your post made me think of the 'cuckoo clock speech' from The Third Man:

"You know what the fellow said—in Italy, for thirty years under the Borgias, they had warfare, terror, murder and bloodshed, but they produced Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci and the Renaissance. In Switzerland, they had brotherly love, they had five hundred years of democracy and peace—and what did that produce? The cuckoo clock."

1968 was wild. In many ways the fallout is still falling. People keep talking about being 'over it'. Yeah, right.
Boomer resentment makes people say nonsensical things.

37. What stands out to me
is just how many on that list have enjoyed a much longer productive life than "little green apples."

I could sing the chorus of "apples;" I remember it. I wouldn't listen to it on purpose, though. Yet I have 60% of the list you gave on my CD rack or playlist right now, and could sing some of another 20% without much trouble.

42. Yup
A lot of classics on that list (pulled the first list I found using google, http://digitaldreamdoor.nutsie.com/pages/bg_hits/bg_hits_68.html)

Very few songs that would be torture to listen to and some good hits from the one timers.

35. 'Honey' was a depressing song. 'Harper Vally PTA' was big hit, but kinda novelty.
