Where is the bailout for heartland home (w/pics)?
Heartland Home closing / Struggling with finances, commissioners decide to shut down facility

Ashland County commissioners announced Thursday they intend to close Heartland Home effective March 31.

They cited tight fiscal constraints as the primary reason for the closure. The decision was not easy because of the impact it will have on residents and employees, according to Commissioner Barb Queer. She said the move comes down to dollars and cents with the county struggling to make ends meet.

"This is probably one of the most difficult issues we as a board are going to have to deal with for a long time," Queer said.

The county's goal now is safely placing residents in appropriate facilities and providing support services for workers who may be displaced in the transition, according to Commissioner Kim Edwards. She said she saw a "glimmer of hope" for Heartland Home on Wednesday afternoon when a private business looked into operating the facility. By the end of the day, she said, it withdrew interest.

"I have a real concern about being fiscally responsible to the taxpayers," she said.

"It is my personal opinion that it's time to close the home."

Heartland Home administrator Jack Robinson said his main concern also rests with the future of residents and about 30 employees. He said he will use more than 30 years experience in the health care field to get residents placed into appropriate locations.
