Spokesman defends Steele's campaign spending
Claims by convicted felon focus on RNC chairman's 2006 Senate bid

By Tricia Bishop and Laura Smitherman and
February 8, 2009

A spokesman for Michael S. Steele defended the new Republican National Committee chairman yesterday against claims by a convicted felon that Steele misused campaign funds from his 2006 Senate bid.

Curt Anderson, a political consultant and Steele spokesman, said the allegations had been "fabricated" by Steele's former campaign finance chairman, who was seeking a more lenient sentence in an unrelated criminal case.

The Washington Post outlined the accusations in yesterday's editions, including a claim that Steele's campaign paid money to a company owned by his sister for services never performed, and the improper use of tens of thousands more in campaign money.

The accusations come from Alan B. Fabian, a former finance committee chairman for Steele's Senate bid, as he was trying to cut a deal with Baltimore-based federal prosecutors. Fabian, of Hunt Valley, was indicted in August 2007 on fraud charges.

1. Typical repuke-
don't answer the charge, just discredit the one who is making the charge.
Steele's sister took money for "catering services" to a company that had been bankrupted for
many months. Sounds like trouble for Steele. so sad.

4. "The transactions are recorded in publicly available campaign finance documents."
No matter how much dust everyone's trying to kick up—and, boy, the way this piece is written sure contributes to the MEGO reaction of any reader who isn't already familiar with the players—this sentence I quoted is the nut of the story. Who cares if Sis is "a doctor and former wife of boxer Mike Tyson"? She got $37K from her brother for services performed by a company that didn't exist. This guy is dirty. Doesn't matter that his finance director is separately dirty. Michael Steele is knee-deep in it.

5. No Honor Among Thieves.
Steele is a for-hire politician who will parrot whatever his current owners tell him to.

He will be the gift that keeps on giving; I think he is dirty as hell and this is just the tip of the iceberg.
