with judd gregg leaving the senate, these three are the only ones left from their entire geographic region of the country--on bill after bill they will have much more in common with democrats from the northeast than southern pubs. Plus they all know how blue their states are. with gregg leaving i think it will be easier to get them to work with senate dems on legislation. they have nothing in common with burr (NC) or graham/demint (SC), Chambliss (GA), Martinez (FL)Shelby (AL) etc.

as much as we despise lieberman, i think collins and snowe and specter will vote very similar to him so it may have been a good move by president obama to have kept him in the fold

1. Collins and Snowe will be the gift that keeps on giving to Maine.
Not sure about the rest of America, though.

Specter, Collins & Snowe will not vote like Lieberman. Lieberman is a strong dem on virtually all domestic issues. Specter, Collins and Snowe are not. Snowe & Collins are pro-choice, Specter may be pro union, but aside from that my hopes are not high on progressive agendas from them.

I will say though that Collins & Snowe helped us get past 60 votes to get the Lilly Ledbetter act passed. And we will get their votes on the watered down stimulus (if 100% of the GOP senators were wingnuts they would've blocked any stimulus that wasn't 100% tax cuts). And Specter may (may not though) help us get EFCA.

But I would take them over any southern wingnut any day of the week. If we get a cap/trade policy passed, EFCA, or universal healthcare then Collins, Snowe or Specter are going to play a role in all of those policies.

6. Those three are extremely vulnerable in the next election
Thats why many of us didnt believe Obama needed to keep trying to be so bipartisan after he was rebuffed in the House vote.

They have little choice (on economic matters, in particular) but to vote with the Democrats.

9. Snowe and Collins are opportunistic careerists
They are not progressive in any way shape or form, and as a Maine Democrat, I get weary of reading their praises from Democrats.

Every election year Snowe and Collins work their tails off to elect right wing extremists to the Maine legislature. They are not our friends.
