This month's VANITY FAIR is a rip-off. |
|
I bought the latest issue of Vanity Fair, the one with Obama on the cover. Vanity Fair is an intermittently good magazine so I usually check out the table of contents before buying an issue. The latest issue features Obama on the cover with the words THE OBAMA ERA BEGINS in big letters. Further down on the cover it says: Also, HOLLYWOOD 2009. Imagine my annoyance--after actually buying the magazine--at opening the damned thing and realizing that this issue is really just the HOLLYWOOD ISSUE with an Annie Leibowitz photo spread of the new administration tucked away almost at the back of the magazine. This was the one time I didn't bother to check the table of contents first. The cover really should have read: HOLLYWOOD 2009--Plus THE OBAMA ERA BEGINS. It's been years since Vanity Fair had someone other than a Hollywood celebrity on it's cover, so I snatched up this latest issue only to find that it's one of the most celebrity-saturated issues in a long time despite Obama's being on the cover. It just really annoyed the crap out of me. A complete waste of five bucks. Thanks for listening.

4. I actually don't read it enough... |

...to make subscribing to it worth my while. I used to buy it pretty regularly back in the '80s and early '90s but after a while it started losing its appeal for me. I buy it about 3 or 4 times a year now--and that's only after checking the table of contents first. Didn't do that this time though and I ended up with an issue that I never would have bothered with if anyone else had been on the cover.

When you buy an issue based on who is on the cover you have more influence over sales.
It's something People magazine learned a long time ago.
