I just heard the most outrageous news story on WCBS Radio!! |
|
Edited on Mon Feb-09-09 04:25 PM by BrklynLiberal
They had a story that there were hundreds of economists, including Nobel Laureates who were saying that the stimulus package would not work. They had taken out a full page ad saying this. He interviewed one of the leaders who said that all the spending done by FDR did not ease that Depression and was the reason we had inflation in the 70s. He said that even temporary tax cuts were not enough, and permanent tax cuts were the only answer. I was waiting for the newscaster to ask why they did not work during the Chimp administration, but he never touched on that. Then he says this guy is from a NON-PARTISAN think-tank..THE CATO INSTITUTE!!!! The kindest thing one could say about Cato is that they are libertarian!!!!'I am so pissed at this total misrepresentation of everything in that newscast, I am writing to the station and would hope you would too. They never mentioned the Nobel Laureate named Krugman who supports this stimulus and would like to see even more spending.
I tried to find some reference to this on their site, but could not. It was between 3:30-4:00PM in NYC.
If anyone else heard it, or is just plain angry that the media is STILL spreading such crap, please write to them and tell them.
Thank you.

3. How exactly does cutting taxes help those who have no income? |
|
Oh, I bet they mean cutting taxes to the WEALTHY! That must be it, because nothing from nothing is nothing, and that is how this would help all the people who no longer have jobs... it would give them nothing.
And those tax cuts we've given to the wealthy all these years... they have done nothing. If they were the saving grace, why the hell are we where we are now?
Funny how stimulus spending was a boffo good idea when Bush did it... and it was worthy of getting down on one's knees and actually begging... interesting how things change, right?

4. Krugman also says that WWII brought us out of the depression |
|
and that FDR's policies had nothing to do with it.

FDR had things getting better before that.
We need something like the CCC and the WPA and so many other programs that created JOBS and got necessary things done.
I'm sickened when I see that Head Start was cut from this bill, as were School Nutrition programs. I didn't want those programs to be bargaining chips. I want Obama to stand up for things like that.

7. WWII=massive government spending. |
|
A good case could also be made that if FDR had not cut unemployment in half, we'd now be living in a Communist country. I love to throw that one at them. Nothing is more dangerous to a system of government than sustained massive unemployment.

had nothing to do with it. He doesn't believe that and would never have said it.

9. I wonder what Republicans have been doing these last eight years? |
|
Who knew they hadn't cut any taxes and are completely to blame for the economic crisis just because they refused to cut taxes.. Who knew  If only they had made Tax Cuts a priority these last eight years we wouldn't be in this fix.

you know? The scene is too bad.. while job creation and spending are noble pursuits to follow, they will not change a thing with the economy. Sure, this will be better then the wall street bailout. But just about the same effectiveness.

17. I hate agreeing with you, but you're right (although probably for all the wrong reasons). |

Unless and until we are prepared to go all in, no matter how many jobs we create, the corporatocracy will fire more. This is a war and only they are waging it.

13. I agree with you 100% about the libertarians, and tha tis part of what got me so |
|
enraged about the newsman saying they were a non-partial group. Most people are not going to bother to check out that statement. Funny how the MSM either misrepresents the Conservative and Libertarian "Think Tanks", or do not bother to give them an adjective at all. But as soon as they are dealing with a "Liberal" Think Tank, it is like the word Liberal is part of their name.
