What's this Bullshit that the Stimulus Passed by One or Two Votes?
61 to 36 in the Senate. Where I come from that's a 25 vote margin. Where I come from an election that ends up 61% to 36% is a fucking landslide.

The house was just as lopsided. Today's Gallup Poll has President Obama's approval rate at 67%.

What's this God Damned one vote horse shit. That one vote margin is on some procedural vote. The actual vote is hardly close. If we needed unanimous consent, would you say we won by one vote? Don't let the assholes spin it like it's some sort of toss-up, because it's not. It's overwhelming support for our President and his policies.

1. They're pushing the meme that it was only 1 vote over the 60 need for cloture
Which of course doesn't have a damn effect on the final vote tomorrow -- probably will be along party lines (with a few exceptions).

8. Actually it's three fifths
I know the rule. I know a filibuster and cloture. That's not the point. The point is 61 to 36 is an overwhelming number, and that should be reported that way. To those who are easily swayed, that one vote margin sticks in their heads. It's not one vote, it's 25 votes.

11. The Senate rule requires a supermajority
(three-fifths of the Senate) to shut down attempted fillibusters with a cloture vote, is based on the number of "Senators duly chosen and sworn" --- in other words, currently seated Senators.

12. I know the rule
Edited on Mon Feb-09-09 10:35 PM by louis c
The point is that a 25 vote margin in a 99 seat chamber is hardly cloe. It should be reported like this, "Although the seldom used cloture rule requires 60 of the 99 senators to vote in favor to move the bill along, the actual vote for the stimulus package had an overwhelming 25 vote margin today."

14. I was responding to #4, not your response
the one who wrote "two thirds (give or take)"

I agree, it should be reported as a wide margin. But the M$M must "frame" the issues for it's Corporate Masters.

and will do everything in their power to make that happen. Even if it destroys the country in the process.

6. I think that's in reference to the votes needed to avoid filibuster.
Also, there was a total of 3 republican votes (house and senate) in favor of the bill.

9. No kidding
I know the cloture rule, but the general public doesn't. They hear one vote and think it's an even split. It's not. It's 25 votes. A Landslide.

16. You claim to know about cloture, but on the other hand you claim a landslide.
Yes, a "landslide" which required 3 Republicans (all 3 of them) to vote with the Democrats and 2 independents. Plus, the general public (which is not DU) are not all stupid either and you never mentioned the general public in your OP. I'm really happy that you seem to get it, but don't get it or whatever.

That's the point.

25. 59 Dem Senators
Once Franken is seated. That in and of itself is a landslide. We defeated so many "moderate" Repugs (Chaffee of RI and Smith of Oregon) that there are only ideological zealots left on the other side. There is no equivalent to "Blue Dogs" on the other side except for a handful. Maybe a max of 4 or 5, if you count Vounivich of Ohio. We've decimated their ranks in both branches, making "bi-partisanship" all that more difficult.

If we increase our sitting Senators to 65 in two years (very possible)it will get even more difficult to find Rep. Sen. to come aboard since the number dwindles.
