The fires seem to skip and jump across the landscape. They are so unpredictable. I've read story after story abut how a house was saved here and there while those of their neighbors were reduced to cinders. In the background of this photo you see plenty of healthy green trees, an undamaged wooden fence and unscorched pastureland. It looks as if these poor folks were so close to safety, and yet...
