1. There will not be a "recovery" to where we were. Those days are gone.

3. Not very optimistic and life is what we make of it.
Granted, mass transport and other forms of transport are inevitable, but that doesn't mean collapse, devastation, *kaboom*, et cetera.

4. I didn't say the result would be "bad".
But, the days of being the top dog in the world economy is over. I actually think, that the end of the American Empire that has been ripping off the planet for decades is a good thing.

2. The 50-Year Economic Recovery Plan
That would be the Republican plan, would it not?

Oh wait...the Republican plan would be the neverending one. The one that never happens!

Somebody get the hook and drag the Republicans out of the Chamber. They aren't needed any longer.

5. The problem with the United States is the same one that plagued the Roman Empire.
Edited on Tue Feb-10-09 01:46 PM by Selatius
Its interests cover large swaths of land and ocean, and it is expensive to protect all those assets. The result is that it is becoming overextended militarily, and the burden is weighing down the economy in the form of taxes and high debt loads.

With the wealthy elite exploiting the poor and a Congress in their thrall, there is no question that the poorer will continue to be exploited in an economy that is rapidly concentrating wealth into the hands of a few dynastic (Or should I say "patrician"?) families.

The United States, like the latter days of Rome, is dominated by powerful and wealthy people who care about nothing but building their own personal empires at the expense of the greater nation. They meddle in politics not because they want to serve the public but because of the prospect of personal gain.

6. Well said. Like Rome, we have become dependent on our colonies.
I'm currently reading the Histories and Annals of Tacitus. The parallels are numerous. Hopefully, our empire will decline with less bloodshed.
