last updated: February 10, 2009 04:42:47 PM

Muzak Holdings LLC, the Fort Mill, S.C. provider of background music to businesses, today announced it has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection so it can restructure its debt.

The company had $105 million in secured bank debt that was due today, part of $440 million worth of debt due between February and March. Last month, Muzak said it had received a 22-day extension on the $105 million debt. The company said today that it and Muzak's major creditor constituencies are committed to completing restructuring negotiations.

Could this be the end of omni-present aural schmaltz?

Now, if we could just get rid of the smell of cheap perfume in elevators we'd be in business.

9. It is a little known fact that Muzak was funded by the former Soviet Union.
Really. You can look it up.

Or was it the Nazis that fled to Paraguay?

Either that or the Trilateral Commission, I forget.

Anyway, some organization of evil bastards intent on inflicting lasting harm on the world.

10. Believe it or not, Muzak doesn't play the "beautiful music" format anymore.
They use regular popular recordings now.

12. Chapter 7 would ensure their demise.
Chapter 11 means they could live on to ruin more songs.

13. Muzak Died 20 Years Ago...
In my radio daze, I worked at several stations that featured "Muzak" or background music. It was relayed via a "sub-carrier" on a normal FM station, you needed a special radio to hear it. In the 90's, they switched to satellite and began to offer all sorts of variations on the elevator music (soft rock, jazz, etc.), but the costs of their new system was significantly higher than the old delivery. Stores had to invest in satellite dishes and other gear to get the signal...many just didn't think it was worth the expense.

Today, there are several companies that sell their own "Muzak" type IPOD players...loaded with Montovani and just plug in and play. No monthly charges or other expenses.

In my book Muzak is like 8-Tracks and Betamax...obsolete and long overdue to go this route.

15. I thought they died years ago...
I hadn't heard Muzak mentioned since the 80's, and thought they were already dead and gone!
