Rep Steve Austria (R-OH) blames Depression on Roosevelt
U.S. Rep. Austria blames Depression on Roosevelt
Tuesday, February 10, 2009 7:36 AM

U.S. Rep. Steve Austria said he supports a scaled-down federal economic-stimulus proposal, but the Beavercreek Republican told The Dispatch editorial board that the huge influx of money into the economy could have a negative effect.

"When (President Franklin) Roosevelt did this, he put our country into a Great Depression," Austria said. "He tried to borrow and spend, he tried to use the Keynesian approach, and our country ended up in a Great Depression. That's just history."

Most historians date the beginning of the Great Depression at or shortly after the stock-market crash of 1929; Roosevelt took office in 1933.

9. Yes they can
That's how we ended up with Rush Limbaugh. We never thought Americans would be stupid enough to believe the shit he said. Guess what. Repeat a lie often enough, plant the seeds of doubt, and pretty soon you've got a majority who don't know what the hell is going on. See Evolution for Exhibit B.

6. Asinine writing here too
"Most historians date the beginning of the Great Depression at or shortly after the stock-market crash of 1929; Roosevelt took office in 1933."

The GDP was already contracting a full YEAR before 1929.

8. Austria is absolutely right
See, the prospect of FDR's election three and a half years later sent the stock market into its tizzy, despite the best laissez-faire treatments of Herbert Hoover and his henchmen. Just thinking about FDR in the White House was enough to make the Rockefellers, Morgans and the other robber barons swoon on their fainting couches, and no amount of smelling salts could bring them around to making America work again.

It all makes sense if you ingest the proper proportions of alcohol, hallucinogens, and your brain is dysfunctional to begin with. Otherwise, it doesn't quite work.

Wall Street Crash of 1929
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
"Black Tuesday" redirects here. For other uses, see Black Tuesday (disambiguation).

Crowd gathering on Wall Street after the 1929 crash.
The Wall Street Crash of 1929, also known as the Great Crash, was the most devastating stock market crash in the history of the United States, taking into consideration the full extent and longevity of its fallout.
Three phrases—Black Thursday, Black Monday/Tuesday are used to describe this collapse of stock values. All three are appropriate, for the crash was not a one-day affair. The initial crash occurred on Black Thursday (October 24, 1929), but it was the catastrophic downturn of Black Monday and Tuesday (October 28 and October 29, 1929) that precipitated widespread panic and the onset of unprecedented and long-lasting consequences for the United States. The collapse continued for a month.

12. What an idiot
FDR: Can't the man READ?
ER: Clearly not, the poor dear. I guess the WPA didn't build enough schools in his area.
FDR: Well, you can lead a dumbass to water, but you can't make it drink, old girl!
ER: Sad, but true.

15. He was elected while Ken Blackwell was OH Secretary of State:
Stephen "Steve" Austria is a Republican member of the US House of Representatives, representing Ohio's 7th congressional district. Previously, Austria was a member of the Ohio Senate, representing the 10th District, first elected in 2001. Prior to that, he was a member of the Ohio House of Representatives from 1998 until 2000.
In 2004, Austria easily won re-election to the Senate by defeating his Democratic challenger Charlie Hart, a Springfield, Ohio-area farmer.

In early 2009 Steve Austria was criticized for his historicaly ignorant comment in an interview with the Columbia Dispatch that FDR's New Deal created the great depression. He was subsequently forced to redact this statement.<1>

In a one-page e-mail, the Beavercreek Republican wrote: "I did not mean to imply in any way that President Roosevelt was responsible for putting us into the Depression, but rather was trying to make the point that Roosevelt's attempt to use significant spending to get us out of the Depression did not have the desired effect. Roosevelt did not put us into the Depression, but rather his policies could not pull the nation out of the recession."

The day before, as Austria was explaining his opposition to the huge federal stimulus package backed by President Barack Obama, he told The Dispatch editorial board: "When Roosevelt did this, he put our country into a Great Depression. ... He tried to borrow and spend, he tried to use the Keynesian approach, and our country ended up in a Great Depression. That's just history."

Austria said he gave that message via telephone to constituents at a recent town-hall meeting.
