Soldier who went to Canada turns himself in

SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) - A soldier who fled to Canada four years ago to avoid the war in Iraq has turned himself in to military police at Fort Stewart in Georgia.

Cliff Cornell is expected to face criminal charges for abandoning his unit before it deployed to Iraq.

He says he fled because he doesn't think the war has improved the lives of Iraqis, and because he couldn't stomach the thought of killing. He says he was told during training that he should "shoot to kill" if anyone came near his vehicle. Cornell says he "didn't join the military to kill innocents."
