13. Oh please - Hillary is the one who got Bill to fire Rahm from the W.H.
Rahm was running his own agenda in that W.H. and it got him fired. Also, Rahm was considered to be one of two "big leakers" to the media who were trying to drive their own (not the administration's) policies.

wouldn't make a difference which one won because they would start governing from the same principles. I think Obama is going to have to really change though, if he's going to succeed. Hillary would have had to as well.

33. Me too, Cleita
The instant I saw that the media were denying any exposure to Kucinich and Edwards and making it all about the "Black Guy vs. the White Woman" I had no doubt how the game was rigged.

15. There's a bizarre delusion that he's not in sync with the Prez
Sure, Obama doesn't want to be the strong-arm guy, and he never seems to want to piss off everyone, whereas Rahm gets a sick, pissy and arrogant thrill from putting the screws on others, but their POLICY AIMS, POLITICAL BELIEFS AND TACTICAL TRICKS ARE VERY SIMILAR. Obama just doesn't want to be seen as the bad guy, whereas Rahm nauseatingly relishes it seemingly more than anything else. Witness his hysterical response when Obama makes light of "Rahmbo" in public settings. When Obama says that he donates his time teaching profanity to underprivileged children, Rahm is in the aisles, same when it's pointed out that the Arby's incident that caused him to have most of his middle finger removed rendered him almost mute. Rahm laughing is not a pretty sight: there's a vengefulness to it that's quite unsettling. (Hey, at least these guys have senses of humor...)

This is why the Obama-is-the-messiah slur sticks so well: so many of his stalwarts exhibit the same form of adulation as people do for a deity. Nothing bad is his fault. He's all things good. Anything bad he does is merely a ruse to sucker the reactionaries, after which he'll bound forth with pristine progressivism, or it wasn't actually HIS doing at all. Rahm is a necessary component to this mythology: he's the one who's responsible for all the nasty fellow-traveling with corporatists, he's the one who botches tactical moves, he's the big meanie and it's all his fault. People LOVE having the world so neat and tidy, and those who go out of their way to prove what they've already determined, skewing all evidence to sustain their rigidly held contention are acting like religious believers.

Chris Matthews pointed out how he was chatting with Emanuel at some social function either just before or just after the inauguration where Rahm beamed to him that he agreed with Machiavelli that it is better to be feared than loved. Great. Primitive, fear-based leadership works behind the scenes. Another tough-guy; just what we need. Weaklings everywhere root for his revenge.

Much as we've heard of the gentle and all-encompassing collaborative nature of this administration, they're pretty damned hard behind the scenes. Ask Dean. Ask the progressive caucus.

Rahm is more true to what is going on than much of the rest of the face of this operation. That's not all bad, either, but it's a good reminder: there's some SERIOUS vengeance, pigheadedness and politics-as-usual going on along with all the hope, bipartisanship and change.

22. Style, not substance
The theory that Rahm is a necessary enforcer for a beatific leader simply reeks. People need to live with the fact that our President is pretty hard-nosed. For Christ's sake, that's not such a horrible thing, even though I don't particularly like arm-twisters. I just don't like fantasy. That's why I don't like religion or the hagiography of individuals.

Obama wouldn't get such true joy from his undeniably funny cracks about Rahm's ham-fisted modus operandi if he didn't LIKE that kind of thing, now would he? Who picked whom? Was there any mystery about who and what Rahm was when that was done?

I just don't buy the compensation line. Just because the leader doesn't want to get his hands dirty doesn't mean he's above it when he specifically hires and delegates to someone whose specialty is to use dirty-hands approaches.

It doesn't make a lick of sense except that people want to hold their saintly image of our President and will bend all reality to keep that ethereal image intact. Does. Not. Compute.

Or as Comicbook Guy would say: Worst. Delusion. Ever.

20. Well Liz you know I can be a bit histrionic! By the way
I just heard that according to Gibbs' press release Gregg ASKED for the job. So (to fit my thesis) Rahm got punk'd. (Although really Obama got punkd, but Rahm's JOB is to prevent it from happening)
