Has anyone else found monster.com and careerbuilder.com to be completely worthless?
I've applied for more than 100 jobs on those websites over the last 1 1/2 years, and I've received a whopping total of 2 callbacks. Meanwhile, I've changed jobs on my own in that time, with no assistance from either of those websites.

1. The posted jobs probably get a lot of applications.
I've been contacted by recruiters who found my resume on those sites.

3. Yup.
Worthless as tits on a boar hog. Craigslist has been a better resource. All I have gotten from Careerbuilder is ever-increasing amounts of spam. They apparently vet none of their job listers.

Case in point: Someone has been listing jobs in IT in my area for months. Months. Never gotten a callback, never a response. I have complained to Careerbuilder. Never a response from them, either.

It's all a cruel joke. As one person said: "By the time they hit the big job boards either the position is filled or its part of an H1-B scam". Take a look sometime at the listed quals for a listed IT job on there. No human has all those qualifications. H1-B scam.

4. About 6 months ago, I looked around on monster.com but didn't submit my resume.
Since that time, I've gotten a weekly e-mail for the same jobs/locations in my supposed "save" file, with no updated ones -- seriously. I wasn't too impressed with that.

I would be interested to know which websites are most useful & effective.

10. If you're interested in freelance
or work-at-home positions that aren't scams, then www.genuinejobs.com is a very good site. They have a lot of good, genuine, verifiable positions in a variety of fields (writing, editing, research, IT, blogging, programming, etc.). There's no fee to join the site, either.

Monster and CareerBuilder are good for some types of fields and positions, but not for others. It just depends on what you're looking for. Their articles and discussion boards are often useful, I've found.

8. I *think* every job I've had in the last 5 years has come from monster...
... typically I get 5-15 replies within a day when I activate (or edit, or whatever it's called) my resume there. Hell - I've continue getting emails from recruiters who find me there.

I guess it's like with a lot of other internet things: your mileage may vary. Presumably it would be a lot harder in today's economy, anyway.

11. Yup. Completely useless.
But if you want to find a site that is useless AND quite obviously more interested in getting people to buy into franchises and/or sign up at online Universities. try Careersite.com. What an ABSOLUTE POS waste of time.

12. I use Craigslist and Simplyhired.com
Simplyhired pulls jobs from a bunch of different sites, though I can't say I've had much luck with calls from that so far. CL is definitely the best resource I've found.

15. Craigslist in my area is starting to have a lot of scams
MLM, etc. Unless of course you want to sign on as waitstaff or a nail technician, then there is tons of those jobs. We've also spotted many job listings that send you to an entry site that will then funnel into Careersite.com, which is bogus, as far as we can tell. ALL the bogus lead-in pages use the same information templates, so they are easy to spot. I wish craigslist was a bit more vigilant in rooting out the BS.

13. I use it differently
I put my IT resume on Monster as confidential and have applied for no jobs on the site. I just wait for employer hits. I've gotten some emails and a phone interview, which by my own admission, I royally screwed up by arguing with the knothead and telling her she was wrong about some technical details of the position. It's about what I expected. I'm not in a hurry though, I'm currently working.

16. They are useless in that they are passive
You should be active in your job search. Monster and Careerbuilder are good for finding companies who are hiring. But truthfully, you have much better odds networking your way in companies - getting that resume on someone's desk.

20. Many places WON'T take resumes unless they are submitted thru
Careerbuilder or Monster. They don't give fax numbers. And once the resume goes into either site, it's like sending it into a black hole. And don't even get me started on those temp to perm jobs...

17. I found a job via careerbuilder
Of course that was only after applying to about 100. In my field you generally just use careerbuilder to get in touch with contract agencies who actually post the jobs. After you find a job you think you are qualified for you call the recruiter at the agency posting the job and ask them to send your resume in. That worked for me. Actually applying directly through careerbuilder was a total waste.
