In case you missed it, there were two executions today...
Danny Joe Bradley, a resident of Alabama's death row for more than 26
years, was executed by lethal injection and pronounced dead at 6:15 p.m.
today at Holman Correctional Facility.

Johnny Ray Johnson, 51, becomes the 8th condemned inmate to be put to death this year in
Texas and the 431st overall since the state resumed capital punishment on
December 7, 1982. Bradley also becomes the 192nd condemned inmate to be
put to death since Rick Perry was elected governor in 2001.

Bradley becomes the 13th condemned inmate to be put to death this year in
the USA and the 1149th overall since the nation resumed executions on
January 17, 1977.

(And it's only the middle of February.)

1. Shame it took so long.
Danny Joe Bradley, raped and then strangled his 12 year old step-daughter to death.

Johnny Ray Johnson raped and murdered a woman after she refused to have sex with him. Actually he raped her twice.

13. Johnson was a scumbag, but there were questions of fact...
in Bradley's case that were not allowed to be brought in evidence on appeal.

Neither point, however, explains why we still have a death penalty. Even for proven scumbags.

14. Death by government is even creepier..
Colder...more premeditated.

I'm ashamed that my government gets off on murdering people (No matter how fucked those people are).

17. I don't know that they "get off" on it.
They're just serving justice. Justice is blind and cold. As cold as the person who would tear somebody's clothes off, knock her down, bash her skull against the concrete, rape her, come back a little later because they forgot their wallet, rape her again and then crush her windpipe with a well placed boot. These guys got off easy.

19. For not being as filled with hate as you?
Sure ya do. Enjoy your vengeance. Get those hands good and BLOODY. You betcha.

There is a coin. On one side are the people you are happy are now dead. On the other side is you. You imagine that is a just and righteous place to be, but it isn't. The best thing is to not be a part of that dialectic at all. To rise above it, if you can. You have failed to do so.

innocent person.

With all the people released from prison over the past decade due to new DNA evidence, eyewitnesses recanting their testimony, and newly found instances of police or D.A. corruption, it's almost assured that any state with the death penalty has executed at least one innocent person in their history.

So, until we can 100% guarantee that every person given the death penalty is truly guilty, get rid of it as an option.

9. Yes, making certain that we are not excuting innocents makes the death penalty too expensive
And it takes too long to be a deterrent. We need different ways to prevent the crimes in the first place and to reduce the recidivism rates. I wish there were more efforts for those things and less for building more ways to lock people up.

21. Breaking news on our 6:00 p.m. local newscast
The news anchor announced that it was confirmed that Bradley was dead, with more details at 10 p.m. It was almost like announcing who had won the state championship playoff. Ugh! Until recently, most executions were held at midnight or thereafter, but I guess now they want to get us all into the rah rahing. It makes me wonder what is next on this slippery slope...

22. The death penalty is racist, especially in Texas
I don't know anything about these cases but not a single person in Texas was given the death penalty for killing a black victim. I can't believe people support the death penalty especially in Texas.
