Do Republicans Have A Future As A National Party?
More and more I'm thinking less and less. This Judd Gregg thing has me thinking less and less, and Barack Obama's overtures toward bi-partisanship may be the coup de gras to Republicans.

Compromise just isn't something they do. Evolution isn't something they can believe in. Adaptation is for weaklings and "appeasers" (by their definition of the word). How many times have we heard it all? And what are they busy doing right now? Why, their smearing of course, and they're denying that we're staring down the Great Depression II or that their perverse ideology had anything whatsoever to do with this. It's all "Liberal" policies like the Civil Rights Act that promoted "Liberal" lending policies in the first place.

There's no talk of Bush's failures. None. Zip. Zero.

Of course we have to have tax cuts. Can't have "pork".

I swear, they're absolute caricatures. They're cartoon characters. They're pure noise.

I admit that I didn't foresee them falling so far, so maybe I'm missing something here. But right now I don't see a whole lot of hope for "conservatives". Not this group. They are intent on going down with the ship and staying there.

1. They seem content with their traditional 30% base
I guess their fuzzy math tells them that's all they need, which is fine by me.

Wither GOP.

2. As long as there are stupid people in the US
and/or those still stuck in the mid-20th century mindset, unwilling to adapt to a rapidly changing world.

3. Not exactly true...
Republicans are happy to dump on Bush for betraying Republican economic principles (ignoring the fact that they never complained while they were in charge...)

4. Who knows? If they find their next "Reagan" maybe
The GOP was in shambles in 74 too....

Then all things changed after the CIA did the bidding of some very nasty people...

6. As long as the majority of people don't believe their lies,
then no. I will not underestimate their ability to repeat a lie.

7. As long as they play to the crazy conservative fundies and rwingers no.
Those two factions will not give up their lust for power however. The gop serves a need for them. But for the gop to be a national party again they must jettison these groups.

9. It will adapt. We aren't going to become a one-party nation.
The current Republican Party may shift more to the center, or may change some its emphasis, making some of the current fundamentalist and supply-siders feel less welcome. The further left Obama goes, the more left the Republicans can go to pick up center votes. They will still be the party of the far right. As always, the most centrist party will win (that's just mathematics, not ideology), and will be influenced by it's own edges to pull the nation left or right, depending. When things go wrong, the other side moves in.

People were predicting the demise of the Democratic Party in 92, when Clinton was trailing both Bush and Wacko Perot, and then Clinton came back and won.

Let's make hay while we own the farm, in other words, because the other side will get it back one day.

10. They have the M$M, hate radio, and the megachurches on their side
They control the message and will be back in power in just a few years unless we do something about the above.

All this celebration of their losses is coming way too early.

13. Excellent points, TV is full of tension-creating idiot repukes
TV has become one big comedy plot, they introduce some conflict that must be resolved then the characters act out all their roles until the next show when it starts all over again.

The South also has a different mindset, anti-gov't traitors basically, who literally want to destroy the U.S. gov't as it exists. The repukes get votes there and will concentrate their efforts on those people and remain a political party.

12. Of course, look at the numbers of the last election
I didn't see any enormous wins, no Reagan type landslide there. Things are still pretty 50-50 nationally.

15. Absolute power corrupts absolutely. We WILL fuck up.
It's just a matter of time. Ever heard of Tammany Hall?

I'll never forget when my state legislator, a Dem, was padding his payroll with no show jobs for family and friends...and I was told by my reform Democratic club that I had to vote for him because he voted our way.

18. Not if we are eternally vigilant
and never stop warning everyone about how terrible life under the Rethugs can be. Reagan and Bush The First got in because too many years had passed and faded too many memories. With the internet and a discredited national media, that never has to happen again.

19. They will easily win control of Congress and the White House in 2012 if ....

this nation is experiencing an economic depression. Are you certain that the economy will be much better in four years? Like President Obama said, he does not expect to be re-elected in four years if the economy doesn't turn around.

Radical actions must be taken to stop this quickening economic decline.

1. The Obama administration needs to present an economic stimulus plan to Congress that can provide a strong jolt to the economy and put millions to work at useful public works projects in the next few years.

2. The major banks need to be nationalized pronto!

3. Several hundred billion dollars need to be spent to prevent foreclosures and stabilize the housing market.

If these actions aren't taken quickly, the Republicans will reap the rewards of an all-out collapse of the economy, which is what they want and expect, if only timid and half-way measures are taken to stop the downward spiral to depression.

So don't be smug and so quick to write off the right-wing Republicans.
