Ky. Senate OKs bill to ban 911 calls from airwaves

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) -- The Kentucky Senate has approved a bill that would prevent TV and radio stations from broadcasting 911 calls.

Broadcasters have opposed the proposal, saying it's tantamount to censorship. Nevertheless, the GOP-controlled Senate approved the measure sponsored by GOP freshman Sen. John Schickel by a 27-9 count.

Current state law requires emergency dispatching centers to make 911 calls available to the public when requested. Schickel's bill would allow people to listen to audio calls and take notes and obtain written transcripts of calls.

Certain details, including callers' identities, medical information and statements that could compromise a criminal investigation would be redacted under the plan.
