An honest request for lurking Reagan worshipers: |
|
Edited on Fri Feb-13-09 05:37 PM by 11 Bravo
I have but one question ... why? During Reagan's tenure the deficit exploded (with nary a word from any of you Republican "deficit hawks"); a blanket amnesty was offered to undocumented workers (a policy with which I agreed, but which is clearly anathema to you); our troops were pulled out of Lebanon (and I didn't hear a single one of you REMFs accuse him of pursuing a policy of "Cut and Run"); there are several documented instances of President Gipper confusing scenes from his old movies with real life (he was, in fact, FUCKING SENILE); and, oh yeah, a prostitution ring was discovered to be operating out of the White House (Hell, Clinton's blow jobs were free and legal, yet you tried to run him out of town). I'll ignore the fact that his policies led to the decimation of the middle class (because despite all of your "working man, Joe the Plumber" bullshit, you secretly believe that was a good thing). I'll also skip over the fact that he shamefully and callously refused to fund HIV-Aids research at a time when we could have made a very real difference (because you believe he was just allowing the Lord to work his will). But seriously, all that other shit, had it been done by a Democrat, would have reduced you to slobbering apoplexy. So I'll ask it again, why are so many of you still trying to elbow each other out of the way in your endless attempts to get one more chance to suck Reagan's dead, dusty, dick?

2. Most people dont' base their loyalties to individ. on facts. It's impressions... |
|
Edited on Fri Feb-13-09 05:34 PM by Captain Hilts
Especially among the most devout whether it is in favor of someone, such as RR, or against them such as Nixon or Gingrich.
People are also lazy. So they go for personalities and they lazily believe what they are told. In the late 80s college kids still believed that Carter ran up the largest deficits the country had ever seen. Most don't know why they were supposed to hate Nixon.
It's emotional.

7. The week that this corrupt bastard died, my buddy the grocer had a customer |
|
who told him, over the ring up, what a great president Raygun had been. "He saved your country".
My friend had been kidnapped and held for over a year by the "Contras" because he refused to fight with them. He has healed over cuts all over his face that he got that year.

6. I take it you're being rhetorical. I doubt there are many Reagan worshippers around here, unless |

they're disruptors and trolls in deep cover.
Who are all these dead, dusty dick-suckers of whom you speak? I don't know a soul who thinks Reagan was anything other than a mendacious though avuncular asshole.
ON EDIT--I see you've revised to address your remarks to lurkers.

get elected? I sure don't worship him, and I am only aggravated by those that do. But, he didn't skyrocket the deficit, he just doubled it, but that was after HE PROMISED a balanced budget, and supported a CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT for a balanced budget. So, to the worshipers, it's not as though he LIED it's just that he didn't tell the truth.

10. Do you think this little website, with a teeny, tiny fraction of the US electorate, is somehow |
|
representative of the USA? Think again. This site isn't even representative of the full flavor of the Damocratic Party in all its nuance. This site is populated, to a large extent, by the left wing of the party. Moderates and centrists here are accused of being "conservative Democrats." And the conservative Democrats can't say shit here without catching a world of poutrage--so much for tolerance.
I make it a habit not to hang about with GOP rightwingers, so I don't deal with them. That's why I don't know a soul who's into the Adoration of The Reagan.
A good chunk of the country voted for the guy, but I didn't and don't hang out with people of that persuasion.

11. I'm pretty sure he was also a shit-hot Navy fighter pilot, (at least in Reaganworld). |
|
Which really pisses me off, because my Dad WAS a career Naval Aviator, who engaged in aerial combat in the South Pacific and Korea.

18. Raygun wasn't as popular when he was in office as the pugs would have you believe |
|
When Clinton was going through his impeachment, he had higher approval ratings than Raygun ever achieved throughout his 8 years.
The Raygun myth just keeps getting larger and larger as the wingnut pundits keep trying to revise history, but the fact is he did almost nothing right and practically everything wrong.

22. The had a 63% approval rating when he left office. |
|
That wasn't too shabby compared to post WWII presidents, and he beat all other Repug presidents hands down.
However, all Raygun ever had going for him is he could read a script and make some people believe it (or at least make some people think he believed in it). Considering he was an actor practically his entire adult life that wasn't really that surprising.
All of the mythical nonsense about Raygun winning the cold war or fixing the economy is complete fiction. In fact, Raygun extended the cold war and did far more to harm the economy than he ever did to help it.

At a press conference, someone asked: "What are you doing about the (Iran) hostage crisis?"
The Gip paused blankly, stared at the questioner, blinked, and said nothing.
"We're doing everything we can", whispered Nancy Gip from behind, plainly audible.
"We're doing everything we can", replied The Gip.

24. I'm reminded of a great Zippy comic from the late 80's... |
|
Reagan at podium, replying "Nhh! Guh! Mmeh!" to questions from press. "Nancy" from Nancy and Sluggo comic strip whispering in RR's ear. Zippy asks whether Nancy has to "coach him in everything." I guess comics don't translate into print very well, but it was a funny, timely strip at the time...

Reagan was hardly Mr. Wonderful. But there is an argument (weak though it may be) to explain Reaganolatry -- but you needed to be alive and aware in the 70s and 80s to know it instinctually.
