DISCUSS: Senator Leahy has set up a petition at www.BushTruthCommission.com
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=103x424803

===============
I have proposed the idea of a truth and reconciliation commission to investigate abuses during the Bush-Cheney Administration -- so they never happen again. These abuses may include the use of torture, warrantless wiretapping, extraordinary rendition, and executive override of laws.

Please sign this online petition, urging Congress to consider establishing a truth and reconciliation commission to investigate the Bush-Cheney Administration's abuses.

Thank you,

Patrick Leahy
U.S. Senator

===============
Full Petition Text:

I hereby join Senator Patrick Leahy's call for the establishment of a truth and reconciliation commission, to investigate the Bush-Cheney Administration's constitutional abuses so we make sure they never happen again. These abuses may include the use of torture, warrantless wiretapping, extraordinary rendition, and executive override of laws.

A truth and reconciliation commission should be tasked with seeking answers so that we can develop a shared understanding of the failures of the recent past. Rather than vengeance, we need a fair-minded pursuit of what actually happened. The best way to move forward is getting to the truth and finding out what happened -- so we can make sure it does not happen again.

A Truth Commission to Investigate Bush-Cheney Administration Abuses
by Senator Patrick Leahy

It's great to be here blogging at Daily Kos!

We have just emerged from a time when White House officials often acted as if they were above the law. That was wrong and must be fully exposed so it never happens again.

The Daily Kos community and the netroots played a vital role pursuing, demanding, and exposing the Bush-Cheney Administration's numerous abuses. But there's still more we don't know, and more we must uncover, about the misdeeds of the past eight years.

That is why I proposed the idea of a truth and reconciliation commission to investigate abuses during the Bush-Cheney Administration.

6. he also said this
""Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., said the primary goal of the commission would be to learn the truth rather than prosecute former officials, but said the inquiry should reach far beyond misdeeds at the Justice Department under Bush to include matters of Iraq prewar intelligence and the Defense Department.

Leahy outlined his suggestion for a "truth and reconciliation" commission during a speech at Georgetown University Monday.

"I'm doing this not to humiliate people or punish people but to get the truth out," he said."

7. "the primary goal of the commission ..." cannot be powers they do not have!
Prosecution is done by the Justice Dept., not be commissions.

The role of a Truth Commission can aide in prosecution, even speed up prosecutions.

No commission is what Republicans want.
No commission accomplishes nothing, what the R's (and you?) want.

10. So now you are Sen. Leahy's spokes person? I call BS. You don't want the Truth!
Knowing the truth is not a barrier to prosecution, it is an aid to prosecution!!

Let's do all we can, everything possible.

13. Can;'t Sign
I can't sign the petition because Leahy characterizes wanting a criminal probe as seeking vengeance.

14. I can't sign that petition, hermanito.
We know the truth and we cannot allow anyone, no matter how well meaning, to divorce us from what we know.

Pat Leahy needs to do his job as the Chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee and he needs to pursue indictments, not immunity.

15. I cannot and will not sign that petition.
We don't need a commission to immunize and put people above the law to get to the truth. We know what the crimes are, we know who the perpetrators are. All the Probable Cause is there to arrest, indict and prosecute. I don't know what motive Senator Leahy may have for preferring a commission over a trial but looking at the end result of previous commissions (searches for the truth) suggests to me that they will neither find the truth nor will they hold anyone accountable. Frankly I couldn't care less if prosecuting Bu$h/Cheney is seen as vengeance or not, regardless of what's done the radical right will make that accusation anyway.
