Bill to ban hallucinogenic herb progresses
Bill to ban hallucinogenic herb progresses

DEADWOOD, S.D. (AP) A bill banning possession of a hallucinogenic herb known as Salvia divinorum has passed the South Dakota House. And Vaughn Boyd, a Deadwood tobacco shop owner, says one look at Internet video of the drug's effects was all it took to convince her that's the right move.

After earlier news coverage of possible legislation to ban Salvia in South Dakota, Vaughn said her shop was inundated with people looking to buy the drug, thinking it might be found in a smoke shop.

She says her shop doesn't carry Salvia and never will.

Teenagers interviewed in Rapid City have said Salvia is all the rage, with several calling it a legal high that can be purchased over the counter in several Black Hills cities.

In Deadwood, a new city statute bans the sale of Salvia to minors.

Experts say it interacts with human brain chemistry in much the same way as LSD.

1. It is native to Mexico.
The reduction of non-native plants is not a bad thing.

2. I see that team drug warrior stupid is still strong
of course we have learned nothing. By all means let us now start to fill the jails with Salvia divinorum users. What better way for society to deal with getting high than the slammer?

the effects of smoked Salvia typically last for only a few minutes. The most commonly reported after-effects include an increased feeling of insight, an improved mood, a sense of calmness, and an increased sense of connection with nature—though, much less often, it may also cause dysphoria (unpleasant or uncomfortable mood).<9> Salvia divinorum is not generally understood to be toxic or addictive, and as a κ-opioid agonist, it may have potential as an analgesic and as a therapeutic tool for treating drug addictions.

9. Salvia doesn't interact with the brain much like LSD at all.
Both are hallucinogenic, but that's about the extent of their similarity.

16. are you a bio-chemist or a recreational user?
just because the effects might not be all that similar or intense doesn't mean that that the way that it works on brain chemistry isn't similar.

11. I can't speak to this exact hallucinogen, but what upsets me is that some very important medical
experiments are being done right now with the effects of hallucinogens on end-of-life terminal cancer patients, and it seems from the early results that it helps enormously in alleviating the fear of death. In fact, they seem to provide many with enormous relief. So, generally, I think it would be very sad to outlaw any experimentation with hallucinogens.

12. it's a very short-lived thing..

I tried it a few years ago. The effects wear off after a few minutes, but those few minutes can be pretty strange. Won't be doing it again.

20. Probably a different kind of salvia.
Edited on Sat Feb-14-09 07:35 PM by crispini
There are lots of different kinds of salvia, most are not hallucinogenic. I have a salvia divinorum, actually, because I like interesting plants. Haven't experimented with it and may never, but it is a lovely, very hardy houseplant that likes to drink a lot of water.

Sage. It's a type of sage. Maybe if we used this sage at Thanksgiving, the turkey would bake itself?

28. I don't know why people do salvia.
It's really not a pleasant high, only lasts about 10 minutes and it tastes HORRIBLE. It's completely legal here, BTW.
