Valentine's Day Story for Homeless People
Boundless promise of love
Couple bruised by life face hard road together
By James B. Meadow, Rocky Mountain News (Contact)
Published February 14, 2009 at 12:05 a.m.

When you've spent your life inside of a kaleidoscope - twisted and churned until it felt like the air was being squeezed out of you - what do you do when you're finally free to breathe?

When you've been abused or abandoned by the very people who gave you life, how do you find a way to open your heart and learn how to hope?

When you've been careening in and out of the lives of adults who never keep you around long enough to remain anything but strangers or enemies, what happens when you're finally flung out for good, homeless, and you discover that concrete isn't the hardest thing about the streets?

When you're wary and angry and stalk life with both eyes narrowed and both fists clenched, how do you stop constantly fighting with shadows and demons?

Simple. You fall in love.

A very touching story. They are young, and still have hope and idealism.

Very many more years of this, and that will, sadly, change.

2. Thanks for posting this
What a great reminder that people who do not have a house, can still have a home. These two are home to each other.

4. I am glad they found each other

Hopefully they will keep their health long enough to reach their goals. Otherwise I fear you are right, their idealism will probably change.

But nice to see they've got a chance together.

6. That is touching - and I hope they get a few breaks. Those kids deserve some kindness.
K&R of course.

14. A lot of us deserve some kindness. But it's in short supply in this society.
We pride ourselves on TOUGHNESS, not kindness.

:(

Thanks for posting!

13. This story illustrates CLEARLY the fact that poor people need most of all LOVE, ACCEPTANCE
and, in short, what all human beings need, but is not considered important in our society.

Mostly what homeless people get is judgment, "advice" and "counsel", and made to feel flawed. Shelters are full of staff and "volunteers" who enjoy looking down other them.

That does NOTHING to strenghthen people---it weakens them and renders them incapable of living a life of meaning.

As they get older, most poor people are so worn down by the ugliness they have received, that they have nothing left to share with each other. So, the very ones who have the understanding often are the least able to give that understanding.

It's up to ALL of us to strenghthen and accept those who have been strangled by this society.

Happy Valentines Day to those who are most hurting!
