One would think that N.C. Chamber President Lew Ebert would get his facts correct before opining in his Point of View column Jan. 30. Ebert stated that the Employee Free Choice Act "takes away employees' fundamental American right to a secret ballot vote about whether or not to join a union." Although the act would provide workers with an additional way of forming unions, the method using secret ballots would still be available should employees desire it.

Corporations and their CEOs do not want employees organizing and obtaining contracts. That is why the chamber opposes this bill, not out of some largess for working men and women.

Millions of hard-working Americans indicate their desire to join a union when surveyed. Today's corporate-dominated system threatens and intimidates workers, many of whom are fired for even mentioning organizing. The Employee Free Choice Act levels the playing field between workers and employers. Given today's culture of corporate greed, working folks need the Employee Free Choice Act.
