Dad's girlfriend told me she LOVES THE OBAMAS! |
|
My jaw hit the floor. 6 months ago, she wasn't so sure. But she was riveted to the inauguration, his speeches, his family, and she is sold. She's 83.
We've had conversations about her peers who are not so convinced, like her older sisters and older friends who can't fathom a black president. They don't 'get' that this is the best thing that has happened in such a long time.
We discussed racism playing a part, and it does in older generations.
But this lady is great. Her son got a ticket to Obama's speech in Ft. Meyers, FL, and he said he was enchanted. He's unemployed, I think, but he talked to her about how positive this event was. And my dad's friend confessed she was shocked he even went. He's about 55, but to hear he even attended a political event was cool, and this guy's wife is also an Obama fan. :)
How cool is that?

1. My 85 year old grandmother is similar |
|
Her views on race are not what we would call progressive: she would not approve of me dating a black woman for example, and he has often used the word "schvartze" in the past to describe black people.
She was a big Hillary supporter, and when she fizzled out, she was pissed. She told my Dad that she could not support Obama because he was black. That was in May.
Well, I called my grandmother about 2 weeks before the election to see where things stood, and she could not say enough nice things about Obama. She said she would vote for him. I suspect that she was influenced by the debates: that once she saw beyond her stereotypes of the "scary black man", she saw the best man for the job. When I saw her over Thanksgiving she was very pleased he won.

2. I'm so jazzed about this. What a learning experience for everyone. |

Even 'some' oldsters. Their world has changed, but those who recognize what happened know it's for the better. Very cool. Thanks for sharing.

5. Sympathies from a similar boat. |

But instead of a cold, I gave myself a broken leg this week. I'd love to someday be 83 and dating, it freaks out the younguns!
But my Mom, who will be 90 in August, called to wish me a happy Valentine's Day, then went on and on and on about how great our new president is - and Obama is the first non-republican she has ever voted for. So I'm "dancing for happy" in my recliner, ice packs and splint included.
