Presidents Day Sale
Edited on Sun Feb-15-09 01:25 AM by ClayZ
We are blessed. Only ever so often comes a blessing like the one we got today. We work on Saturdays at the Pike Place Market in Seattle. We have sold our ocarinas and flutes there for 25 years, this year.

Ricky, Mr. ClayZ, was playing a little tune on a fairly large, low pitched ocarina as the crowd streamed by. We sometimes liken it to a river of people. It was like the whole town came out for Valentines and tulips. The Market was jam packed!

We noticed them coming our way. Dad was holding his son's white cane in one hand and his son's hand in the other. His son noticed the tune and steered Dad towards our stall. Mom and Dad both said, "you can hear that, huh." Mom picked up a smaller ocarina and put it in her son's hands, pointing out the mouthpiece. He put it to his mouth and blew, hard and loud. His face lit up! He may have been ten years old, but probably only nine. He had that "Stevie Wonder" kind of rocking going on.

My husband, Ricky, interviened and grabbed the boys fingers, putting them on the holes and lifting them on and off, the child blew and kept blowing. His face lit up more. "AWSOME" he yelled loudly. He made another pass at the fingering .... grace notes loudly filled the arcade. He did not hold back. He played several notes... and seriously yelled "AWSOME" again. People were stopping and watching and listening and smiling. He repeated the sequence, yelling "AWSOME" at the top of his lungs between each verse. His Dad softly said, "he has whistles, but none change tones." The ocarina he now had, lanyard around his neck, was the highest pitched, smallest ocarina we make. People were entranced by him. Mom said to us all, "He likes high pitches." She smiled and made no excuses for how loudly he was blowing!

I said, "now you can talk to the birds." He yelled, "NOW I CAN TALK TO THE BIRDS!" Again he played his little tune and shouted "AWSOME" ! People were applauding by then. His "AWSOME" was contagious ...

His little sister had one too, by then and was already reading the song charts. She was attempting "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star" from our tabulature poster, and her brother simply twinkled and was a star. He had no idea how many people were enchanted by him. He hollered, "Can we go home? I can play it in the car".... His mother told him that they had only been here for a short time and there is lots to do here. Tweedle de de... he went on his ocarina, always yelling "AWSOME" after each short rift. Dad handed Mr.ClayZ $$$ for the ocarinas. We packed up the songbooks telling Dad that he could explain the tabulatue, and off they went, entertaining people all the way down the arcade.

The last thing we heard him say to , was, "I am going to talk to the birds"...and one more loud "AWSOME"...

They got our "We like the President" Discount. The deal, was 30% off if you like our President. No sale if you don't! Oh what a good day we had. Seattle is SO BLUE!

We did not catch his name, but he is our VALENTINE!:loveya:

5. Pike Place Market was one of my favorite places to visit when I lived in the Dry-Shitties ...
... and visited my friends in Poulsbo on those occasional weekends I could escape the fundy conservatism in Doc Hastings' stomping grounds. It's all about people and community and enjoying the day and life. Thank you for bringing it alive for me again!!

6. I grew up in Richland. No wonder I am still ClayZ.
Doc Hastings is and always has been a weasel.

I had almost forgotten the Dry Shitties! hah!

Our high school mascot was a BOMB. How sick is that? http://alumnisandstorm.com/Mascot.html

Gawd have MERCY on all those who passed through there!

7. "Days Pay" ... yup. There's a full color mural of it in the high school.

The Dry Shitties never went through "the Sixties." It's like a time capsule. Scary place. I lived there (in West Richland) for five years while working at the Lab. Grim.

On edit ... here ya go - the 'mascot' of the Richland High School "Bombers" ...
