Do We Have Socialist Institutions in America ALREADY !
In each city in America there is a fire department, a police department, a SCHOOL SYSTEM all paid for by tax money in a socialist manner. On the national level their is the department of highways that provide maintenance of highways all at tax payer expense in a socialist manner.

So why not a one payer health care system?

1. Because it would be an
entitlement programme, and the Republicans won't be able to get rid of it when they manage to scramble back into power.

6. Having been a memeber of this public "school" system, I can say without a doubt
that it needs reform and damn well quickly too.

I need to take a step back right now; too many horrors flooding back. (In a word: Abuse. I'm leaving it at that.) And my school district tried to take any credit for my successes in this world; I've got a verb and a pronoun I'd love to shove up a very particular noun it's got.

7. Medicare is an efficient delivery of health care for the elderly.
It definitely needs changes. Per Micheal Moore it is a model for how the government should run health care.

14. But we don't have any that make a profit that I am aware of...
Edited on Sun Feb-15-09 10:19 PM by Oregone
And this is a tad unfortunate. A corporation can be 100% government owned, and provide goods/services such that a profit is generated for the people. Im not sure why the government can't buy/start a bank. Why can't it buy/start an insurance company? Why can't it buy/start a transportation company?

16. Some of what we have now has appeared previously on platforms
of the Socialist Party. That tidbit should cause a "gasp!" at a repub family reunion. Here's part of the 1912 platform:

http://texasliberal.wordpress.com/2007/09/19/1912-socialist-platform-good-stuff/

<snip>Minimum Wage—By establishing minimum wage scales.

Direct Election of President—The Election of the President and Vice-President by direct vote of the people.

Social Insurance— ….a general system of insurance by the State of all its members against unemployment and invalidism and a system of compulsory insurance of their workers, without cost to the latter, against industrial diseases, accidents and death.

Also in the platform was woman’s suffrage, public ownership of utilities and a shortened work day.<snip>

18. Newt Gingrich is a great opponent of "socialism" in america.
Every step of his life was funded in one way or another by government programs from books and meals in grade school through his salery as a professor till his pension and lifelong benefits from his terms in the house, including medical care.
Publicans are lying bastards.
