Reason didn't work and the Parliamentary process failed, which is why we in New Zealand now have arguably the world's harshest copyright enforcement law. Sections 92A and C of the amended Copyright Act establish a guilt upon accusation principle that can see anyone accused of "copyright infringement" getting his or her Internet connection severed.

What's more, under the new law, anyone who provides any form of services over the Internet is an ISP. That means libraries, councils, schools, businesses, government offices, you name it. If you share your Internet connection with your flatmates, you're probably an ISP too under the new act. Geekzone is an ISP. Think about what that means.

Found thru one of the most well known twitterers, British actor Stephen Fry (Jeeves), who now has a blacked out avatar ;-)

That's incredibly stupid of New Zealand.

DUers who don't understand how copyright has been twisted and abused and used as a tool of suppression need to read this.

5. Yeah, it's a lot going on right now in the copyright area
An add to this case:

Deal to thwart piracy falters

Efforts to broker an agreement between ISPs and the recording industry on how to apply a controversial change to copyright law are teetering on the brink after both parties expressed severe misgivings over a possible compromise.

Internet users who download pirated movies over peer-to-peer networks or upload copyrighted material to websites would be among those who risked having their internet access cut off under a "four strikes and you're out" proposal put forward by the Telecommunications Carriers Forum (TCF).

The voluntary code sets out one way in which ISPs could enact a controversial change to copyright law that comes into force at the end of the month. ISPs must then cut off internet access "in appropriate circumstances" to customers who repeatedly infringe copyright.

3. Information is power.
Controlling who gets to show that information is controlling the people.

If every song and movie and book and poem, requires permission from an owner to be used, then who owns those things can choose how they are used.

Artist should be compensated, but art should not be confined to be only used by those that have money.

For many years, image presentation has been controlled by a few people that own the TV stations. The internet has allowed people that just want to express an idea to do so using the same information.

Imagine a political situation where half society is rich, half is poor. Now lets say both sides want to show there thoughts in compelling fashion, using the entertaining approaches of Movies art and song.

The rich group will have complete control of all messages.

The poor will be subjugated.

This is information control to stop free thought and exchange of ideas.

7. I agree with your post
and I see this as a cynical attempt to neutralize the growing influence of people power via the Internet.

I believe this is an attempt to stifle the peoples' emotional expression and voices because the corporate, oligarchs' know that if "a picture is worth a thousand words," the emotion behind them pack a lot of free speech or "bang for the buck" if you will.

4. It's coming in Australia too . . .
But not for copyright . . . "to protect the children."

I'm not sure what's worse: straight-up corporate shills (who would impose technically impossible and grossly unfair restrictions) or the Mrs. Grundys of the world (who would impose technically impossible and grossly unfair restrictions).

Gives me the pip, the lot of 'em.
