6. Don't you feel reassured though with the message that there was no
nuclear spillage?! Like they'd tell us if there was. I was amazed that this happened. One would think......

17. No shit. You'd think there was a country out there that has an overwelmingly
powerful military that has been engaged in military adventurism that might be a destabilizing force in the international community...

21. That's like torturing a car driver for hitting the invisible man.
Two stealthy objects couldn't hear each other and collided. It's not the pilot's fault.

24. Actually No.

I'm across the river from the little attack submarines. The giant missile submarines are based out of Georgia.

As for seeing - You can't see that far anyway in the ocean. And for hearing, it works really well for listening in on ships and sealife, or just about anything else that isn't designed to be sickeningly quiet.

Oh, and The Electric Boat Company didn't design or build these submarines.

banthebomb.org:

"On the basis of recorded incidents involving Polaris and other British nuclear powered submarines it can be projected that Trident submarines are likely to be involved in between 2 and 5 collisions with other vessels. Trident submarines in service for 30 years will be in service for a total of 120 reactor years. The projected number of incidents for the projected lifetime of Trident, based on the figures for Polaris and for all British nuclear powered submarines are as follows:

Based on Polaris

5.9 fires
4.7 collisions (all vessels)
1.2 collisions with other submarines

Based on all submarines:

5.9 fires
1.9 collisions (all vessels)
0.6 collisions with other submarines"

25. And what do you expect them to see?
At the depth these ships operate it's very very dark. Even with night vision equipment you still won't see anything until it's close (no light for light amplification, no heat for infrared) and at that point, a 15000 ton ship doesn't turn quickly enough.

26. I recall hearing about a couple of collisions between US and Russian subs
and a few years ago a US sub ran into an uncharted undersea mountain in the Pacific.

But, those subs are seriously quiet. About 25 years ago, while sailing off Ft. Lauderdale, a sub surfaced right next to us at dawn. I don't know if they knew we were there, but we definately didn't know they were there until I glanced towards our port beam and saw a freakin' huge sub surfacing about 50 yards away. Surprised the shit out of us. Even surfaced, it was dead silent.
