Report: Caracas synagogue attack was simple robbery, not anti-Semitism
The break-in and desecration of the Tiferet Yisrael Synagogue in Caracas, Venezuela on January 30 was motivated not by anti-Semitism but rather was a robbery, according to a local newspaper identified with the opposition, El Universal.

The paper reported police statements that a homicide detective headed the gang that attacked the synagogue.

The paper also quoted police sources that one of the robbers, another police officer, who had served as the synagogue rabbi's bodyguard, had thought up the robbery out of anger over the rabbi's refusal to lend him money.

The anti-Semitic slogans, the paper said, were painted to confuse police.

2. Actually, this burglary was planned by some guys in the motorcycle
division because one of them was refused a loan. So, now the Caracas PD is cleaner by about 14 guys.

3. Thanks for posting this, oberliner. That's very decent of you.
As some of us were trying to say when this story first broke, there is nothing the oligarchs in Venezuela won't use to derail the democratizing of the nation. There is nothing they will not exploit because their whole way of life is at stake.

I'm so happy these people were caught and hope the community can take comfort in that fact. Venezuela has always been a very inclusive place as far as the people go.

4. Absolutely
Still pretty sickening that these criminals would desecrate religious objects and paint hateful graffiti even if it was just with the intent of creating confusion.

6. But not before the Miami Herald, the New York Times, the Washington Post
and a slew of other corpo/fascist 'news' organizations had published editorials of hatred and false accusations against Chavez, in their general putrid psyops campaign against democracy and social justice, and likely in an attempt to sway voters in the referendum.

The Chavez government had taken immediate action--to investigate the matter, find the perps and make arrests, and to reassure the Jewish community--and the president of the largest Jewish organization in Venezuela had also immediately stated that no way was it the responsibility of Chavez or his government, which, he said, is a "liberal government," "very supportive of minorities."

But the poison spewed by the corporate 'news' organizations had already spread round the world. And I haven't seen any retraction.

7. Also, the Israeli government. But, they were in the run up to an election.
You're right. I've seen no retractions, either. And even were there retractions, most people only remember the initial sliming.
