They are proposing a 1990% increase in the existing tax that hasn't been raised since 1977. It would bring the tax to about $1.60 per gallon. Even at that it won't be very popular in state that takes great pribe in its microbrewey industry.

6. Raise the price of a six pack by a buck |
|
And brewers would cover this without a problem. This would be a hardship for the cheap beers that go for about $4 for a six pack, but would be less noticeable for the good stuff that retails for $7 or $8 a six-pack. An extra $0.15 per 12-ounce bottle to pay for better schools, road repair and other general fund items. Kind of a bargain when you think about it that way. Which means that the zealots will have be flying out in force to scare the crap out of people that this is some kind of socialist commie plot. The Oregonian will faithfully carry their water for them, I'm sure.

8. Why is it the job of beer drinkers to pay for those things? |
|
Oregon has a progressive income tax, raise that, rather than taxing things that only some people buy.
By the way, look at the video in the link, the "representative" who has proposed this doesn't look old enough to pay the tax!

Oregon will not drive the in-state brewers out of business.

as far as i'm concerned, there are three things that could/should be taxed thru the roof: alcohol, tobacco, and coffee.
