Yep, I'm gonna "run" it again. |
|
I first wrote this during DU's "heart-a-thon" fundraiser in 2007. It was well received. I "ran" it again during the 2008 "heart-a-thon" (during the "primary wars???!!!!" What WAS I thinking?!) I, yes I, was called some sort of rose-colored glasses, wearing, Pollyanna.
Here is what I thought of DU in 2007, yep, even 2008, and once again, in 2009. This is why I am a proud democrat/liberal/progressive/feminist/(insert favorite label here).
-----
How do you get a bunch of ornery, irascible, opinionated, diverse, outspoken, bleeding-heart and in-your-face democrats/liberals/progressives/(insert favorite label here) to come together?
Give them the chance to make someone feel good. Give them a chance to do good for someone else. This heart-athon is the evidence I present to you. (Yes, it's not a scientific study. For today, it's good enough.)
Compare that to the Rolling Stones article in which the author noted that the best way to bring neo-cons together was to give them a common enemy.
THAT, ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, is what I see as the fundamental difference between 'us' and 'them'. We look for the common friend. They look for the common enemy.
I like our way better.
Thank you to my benefactor. You've got a great heart; I'm glad you shared it with me.

1. Every fund raiser on DU is evidence of the good will on this site |
|
So many users are benefactors of the good will of other donors.
This fundraiser is much more expressive than all the other.
BTW: Thank you to all, those who have given heart to others and special thanks go out to those star donors.

you're words are perfect!
I wish Skinner, et al, would find a way to do something like this for every fundraiser - because I think it gives us all a pick-me-up. The stickies are nice, but they aren't quite the same.

7. I think you've nailed it here |
|
"We look for the common friend. They look for the common enemy."
I can't think of anything else that describes the difference in such a black-and white manner.

I somehow missed this the first times. It's beautiful and concise: We look for the common friend. They look for the common enemy.
Makes me feel good.
