Rush Limbaugh on a computer: "To start press any key... where's the any key?"
Edited on Tue Feb-17-09 05:27 AM by ck4829
During the February 13 broadcast of his syndicated radio program, Rush Limbaugh claimed that Democrats "have reformatted the bill -- they've made it a PDF (Portable Document Format, created by Adobe Systems) file when they posted it. Now, for those of you that don't use computers, basically what that means is that it cannot be keyword searched. A PDF file is essentially a picture of a page. And, so, you can read every page, but you cannot keyword search it. It's not a text file as legislation normally is as posted on these public websites. They don't want anybody knowing what's in this."

Hey Rush, did you by any chance try pressing CTRL (The key that says Ctrl) and the F (The key that says "F") at the same time BEFORE making conspiracy theories about Democrats?

1. Rush Limp really makes a case for being replaced by a H1-B worker...
Doesn't he?

It's so hard to find technically capable Right-Wing Drug Addled Pedophile Blowhards in this country... *tsk* Maybe his position should be outsourced.

to blame "librul software programmers" for hiding the "search function"

what I'm expecting to hear: "It's a conspiracy to confound conservatives! They (Dems) KNEW the search function wouldn't be obvious in a pdf file and THAT'S why they chose to publish it in adobe format!"

Edited on Tue Feb-17-09 07:08 AM by geckosfeet
The contemporary pdf format is search-able and permits the use of keywords and descriptions. It has come a long way in terms of being accessible and search-able.

on edit: Adobe and other supporters of the pdf format should contact this moran and tell him to stop mis-informing people about the capabilities of their products. He sure is not doing them any favors by badmouthing the format.

6. Do you have a link to the document he was speaking about?
In many cases a PDF document is scanned in rather than converted and can't be searched.

7. so you think they wrote it in word processing software, printed it, then scanned it to pdf?
sounds unlikely. if they were showing a pdf of all his prescription receipts for oxycontin and sundry other illegally obtained narcotics...I could imagine those would be scanned in. But not a fresh newly drafted bill.

9. The reason I know this is my kids' school does this all the time
They will print off a school roster or other document, scan it and then convert it to PDF. In this format, you can't search it.

I'm not saying Congress did this, but to say it's possible to search all PDF documents also shows a lack of computer savvy.

15. You can purchase software that will print to PDF
Adobe Professional is just one.

The latest version of MS Office has the ability built in to save as PDF as dose many software programs.

12. Rush was obviously whacked out on oxycontin during the Video Professor's presentation on PDFs
because

a) they ARE searchable, and;

b) you can easily cull just the text from a doc if you want to paste into a text document.

That said, I personally find pdf docs annoying, mostly because the reader is a memory hog.

I'm not defending Limbaugh but you can keyword search on PDF files.

Mind you there are various things you can do with Adobe Acrobat but all the PDFs I work with everyday are scanable. I can't edit them but I can look for words.

37. That's not quite fair.
The RA has to figure out how to take perfectly reasonable Democratic policy proposals and spin them to make them seem to be harbingers of Armageddon, and make outrageous Republican crimes & antics seem to be perfectly reasonable.

I imagine it's a real-life Alice-in-Wonderland existence.

27. that would show intelligence ... Rush doesn't want to appear to be an
intellectual, does he?

Besides, that would be reporting an actual fact ... something Rush has a problem with. Gotta spin it that you have to be an elite to know what to do with the bill ...

(Also, making it a PDF makes it much harder to modify - meaning, Rush can't post an altered version of the bill and claim it's the real thing ...)

30. As opposed to Republican bills, which for eight years were completely hidden from us...
...with amendments tacked on in secret in the dead of night, and voice-only roll calls.

Yes, the Far Right is rediscovering journalism now that they are in the minority, wringing their hands over bogus concerns of transparency.

And Rush is counting on his stooges' being too lazy to text-search a .pdf, or easily dissuaded by his say-so.

And depending upon how he has his browser configured, he may not immediately see the search function or text entry level.

On a Mac you'd perform a search by using "Command-F", not "Control-F".
