Sarah Palin's daughter says abstinence doesn't work too good

Sarah Palin's daughter, Bristol Palin, says abstinence is unrealistic in interview on Fox News
News Staff

Tuesday, February 17th 2009, 2:36 AM

Teen pregnancy? Not really a good idea.

Stopping teen sex? Ain't gonna happen.

So says Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin's 18-year-old daughter, Bristol, who told Fox News' Greta Van Susteren Monday night that the abstinence her mom preaches is "not realistic at all."

Bristol Palin's pregnancy, revealed shortly after Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) chose Sarah Palin to be his running mate, shook up the last presidential campaign.

Bristol Palin, who gave birth in late December, described the rigors of being a teen mom, and while she wouldn't go into detail why it isn't realistic for guys and gals her age not to have sex, she did say it isn't smart to get knocked up.

"Everyone should wait 10 years," Palin said. "I hope people learn from my story.

10. Yes she did.
And like many other unfortunate people who have had abstinence education handed to them by religious whack-jobs as a contraceptive, she found that it has a very high failure rate.

Good for Bristol for speaking up and telling the truth on this. You know she is going to catch shit at home for what she did. You think her mom is not the domestic fascist type?

27. Ah, but she is
She was receiving lots of adulation for her pregnancy just a few months ago, and she's trying to get across the point that it's not really that much fun having a baby when you're only eighteen, no matter how many people at the Republican National Convention cheer you on.

She's the poster child for the failure of abstenance-only education, and she's doing a good thing by going on TV to tell young people that having children while you're still a child is not such a great idea. It might actually encourage a few debutantes to take the Pill or ask young Tad to put on that condom.

For thousands of years people have started having sex around the same age. Puberty drives the urge. It is as natural as breathing, eating and sleeping. It is when the natural body feels the need. Can’t change that.

I agree with you. There seem to be a lot of freepers who think the current situation of "hooking up" and "friends with benefits" has always existed. Nope. I graduated HS in 1978 and most people I knew lost their virginity in college.

The whole point of morals (and civilization) is to get humans to behave in unnatural ways. If some guy steps on my toe while waiting in line, my natural response is to pick up a rock and bash his skull. But I don't. I have self control. I have a sense of right and wrong. So, if a 16-year-old boy sees a cute girl, does he want to get her into bed? Yes. Does he need to act on that? No. Self-control is possible, people! This is what moral teachings are all about.

The long history of humanity is the story of human failings and coming up short in the morals department. But that doesn't mean that we give up and say "Go for it!" We're supposed to try to be better than that.

"If some guy steps on my toe while waiting in line, my natural response is to pick up a rock and bash his skull."

Really? That's your NATURAL response?!? For having your toe stepped on!?!? My natural response would be to move my foot and say nothing. But this asshole's natural response is to take the poor sap's life. I guess that puts things in perspective when the freeps seem so incredibly difficult to comprehend. These are people who resist the urge to kill dozens of times within the span of a single day. If you were that incredibly angry by nature alone, voting republican would seem to make some sense.

Thanks for this bit of insight into the freep mentality. I sometimes have a hard time going there, especially after I've just eaten. Someday I'd really like to do some Anthropological study on those morons. Perhaps they are evolution's missing link, but they never managed to die off.

I would say it is not that alone.

But freepers who were homeschooled would have been schooled by Freeper parents. And that would seem to be the only way you could end up thinking that a Senate term is 2 years:

26. It appears abstinence didn't work for Sarah either
http://www.americablog.com/2008/08/sarah-palin-and-children-conceived-out.html

Now a word from religious right leader James Dobson:

"{O}ur conviction is that birth and adoption are the purview of married heterosexual couples. Traditional marriage is God's design for the family and is rooted in biblical truth. When that divine plan is implemented, children have the best opportunity to thrive. That's why public policy as it relates to families must be based not solely on the desires of adults but rather on the needs of children and what is best for society at large." - James Dobson of Focus on the Family, TIME, December 2006

As Joe notes in his post below, pregnancy and birth control - and overall sexual mores - are key issues for conservative voters, and for the Republican party leadership. It is therefore newsworthy, and a legitimate issue, while admittedly somewhat uncomfortable, to inquire as to the practice of those very same issues in Sarah Palin's own life. Let me walk you through the issue:

1. Sarah Palin's first son, Track Palin, was born in April 1989 (we don't have the exact day). Actually now we do, courtesy of FOX News' Alan Colmes. He was born on April 20. For the purposes of this analysis, we will give Sarah Palin the benefit of the doubt and assume that her son was born on April 30, 1989, the longest possible April date from her marriage.

2. Sarah Palin was married on August 29, 1988. She eloped.

3. 38 weeks is the typical human pregnancy.

4. 38 weeks before her son's birthday, April 20, 1989, is July 28, 1988 - i.e., that would be the hypothetical day of conception.

5. If this data is correct, that would mean that Sarah Palin eloped four weeks after her son's conception.

6. Sarah Palin's son could still be legitimate if he was born four weeks premature, AND if he was conceived on the night his parents eloped.

Again, Joe and I aren't very comfortable discussing these kind of issues because, honestly, we don't care when Sarah Palin's son was conceived. But Sarah Palin and John McCain and James Dobson care very much about the conception of your children. James Dobson, the very man McCain is wooing, himself decided that Mary Cheney's out of wedlock conception was worthy of an entire commentary in TIME magazine only 18 months ago. It is at least fair to ask that Sarah Palin meet the James Dobson/Mary Cheney standard, and clarify for James Dobson and values voters everywhere whether her actions match her words.

She admits she made a mistake, she stands up to her mother and speaks the truth about teen sex. I know she is stating the obvious but I do think she is setting a good example now by discussing this and warning others.

She didn't get married because she was forced to by her mother. They wanted her to have a big wedding before the election to pump up the republican party and she wouldn't go along with it. She sounds like she is her own person despite being raised by this person you all so loathe.

57. Actually, abstinence works fine...
Edited on Tue Feb-17-09 03:17 PM by sutz12
It is the single most effective form of birth control on an individual basis.

It's the whole "getting people to be abstinent" part that always fails, especially when you're trying to get hormone ravaged teenagers to do so. A few hundred thousand years of human history kind of emphasises that. I seem to recall an old statistic that a large percentage of births among Puritans were "premature," as in they occurred during the first 5-7 months of marriage.

People with a better grounding in reality generally go with the "teach them some smarts about sex and its consequences and make various forms of birth control available to young folks" strategy. But religion tends to not be reality based to begin with.
