So I was in Kohl's on Saturday and saw what was self described as an American Icon

It was Fiesta Ware

You know the stuff. Highly collectible and recently reissued. Originally made by Homer Laughlin. And still made by Homer Laughlin right here in the USA





They now make flatware to compliment it.



But the flatware isn't made here.

On the boxes (I cannot find an online picture of them) it says, on the top front, next to the distinctive trademark "Fiesta" script are the words "An American Icon".



On the back of the box, at the bottom, it says "Made in China".







.... kinda like all those flags we can buy around the time of the July 4th holiday, I guess ..... :eyes:

1. I have Fiesta Ware--have only broken one plate and one bowl

after almost 17 years, the rest have no chips--it's restaurant-ware strength, almost indestructible. Love the cheerful colors and the Art Deco design. Sorry to hear that the flatware comes from China--that's a letdown.

beware the lead content. I only bought mine in the last 7 years after they made it lead free. I love it except for the grazing that occurs.

8. Well, it's been lead-free since at least 1992, because my pieces say "lead free".

I do have one of their disc pitchers from the thirties/forties, however--I don't use it for liquids.

17. red pieces before ww2 contained uranium and lead

lead was taken out of fiesta ware several years ago.

i`d be more concerned about the amount of lead the chinese are putting into off or no brand name dinner ware they are shipping to the usa. i checked out some plates from a nothing over a dollar store and the plates must have weighed 3-4 lbs. god only knows how much lead those plates contained....well maybe they were glazed cement...

4. I have the reissued Fiesta Ware.

They are my everyday dishes. I really love it. But, I am disappointed about the flatware being made in China.

These dishes are amazing. I have had one broken cup and one broken plate in 18 years. I have kept adding different pieces and colors over the years.

I really believe that the fact that we don't make anything here anymore has had a great deal to do with the disaster we are now facing.

The issue is the irony in their use of the words "An American Icon" on the packaging for their made-in-China accessory flatware.

24. The Point Is Beyond Petty.

They are an american icon. They've produced products for countless years right here in the US. Now, as a VERY small makeup of their product line, they have some silverware made in china. Taking a position that the company no longer has the right to consider itself an american icon based solely on its chinese made silverware, is beyond irrational and petty.

There's not any irony in their packaging whatsoever. A company that makes tons of products that has caused it to become an american icon, does not cease being an american icon merely because one small part of the product line is made in china. This is one of the most ridiculous poutrage threads ever. :hi:

that my own dinnerware (Corelle) is still made in the USA.

As far as I can tell.

Don't know yet if it's lead-free, although it probably is, being glass and all.



I would love to have a set of Fiestaware, though.

Some of the old Fiesta (with the name molded in, not printed and then glazed on) has harmful glazes and may even be radioactive. I'm not sure which and what colors, but I am certain it can be found on the internet or is DU's own collectors forum.

37. It's turquoise and a few years back was worth about $100. I bought it at a yard sale in the Hamptons

on Long Island. I have several collectible water pitchers... a few Halls and a Russell Wright (ugly but valuable chartreuse) I Love the Deco shapes!

My comment about you Fiesta piece was to its safety. You may want to be sure the glaze is lead- (or uranium-) free before using it.

(Deco is our favorite style .... most of our house is furnished with it)

40. A fellow Hall Collector, cool! I don't use any of them and they decorate the top of my kitchen

cabinets (a very safe place to be). Thank you for letting me know! A few of them were made for refrigerators. After I wrote my last post I visited eBay to look into Hall. There is a teapot of theirs I've been coveting for years. The Airflow. The one I like (mint and Cobalt)is unbid on and is at $49.95 opening bid price. I can't afford it now. Those used to be scooped up for over $100. There is one with a drop of missing color in teal that is unbid on at $9.95. I sold a beautiful Hall Aladdin Teapot on Ebay which I picked up at a tag sale for about $20. It sold on eBay in the high $90s. The Aladdins on Ebay right now are very low in price. When one has to place food on one's table, collectibles are the last thing one is buying.
