Former Bush White House adviser Karl Rove disputed an account in the New York Daily News Tuesday claiming that Vice President Dick Cheney was outraged that the president did not pardon Cheney’s former chief of staff I. Lewis “Scooter” Libby.

“I know that he felt strongly about this,” Rove said during an interview on NBC’s “Today Show.” “But I think the tabloids tend to get these things overblown. (Cheney and former President George W. Bush) are two very close men who have a long and enduring relationship that is good and positive.”

The Daily News reported that Cheney was working up until the last minute of his term in office to get Libby pardoned, a report corroborated by Cheney’s own remarks a month ago upon leaving the White House.

“He was the victim of a serious miscarriage of justice, and I strongly believe that he deserved a presidential pardon,” Cheney told the Weekly Standard. “Obviously, I disagree with President Bush’s decision.”
