Statehouse Monument to Dead Fetus
Edited on Wed Feb-18-09 07:14 AM by Are_grits_groceries
Thirty-three state House members, including four local legislators, have put their support behind a proposed statehouse monument that would memorialize “South Carolina children whose lives ended before their birth.”

Reps. Wendell Gilliard (D-Charleston), Jim Merrill (R-Daniel Island), Tim Scott (R-North Charleston), and Mike Sottile (R-Isle of Palms) are co-sponsors of the bill. The monument would be paid for through private donations (the bill stresses that donors would not have to be revealed in public financial disclosures), and the state would be expected to pay for the maintenance of the monument.

The bill reads:

A JOINT RESOLUTION
TO CREATE THE SOUTH CAROLINA UNBORN CHILDREN’S MONUMENT COMMISSION TO ERECT A MONUMENT ON THE STATE HOUSE GROUNDS AS A MEMORIAL TO SOUTH CAROLINA CHILDREN WHOSE LIVES ENDED BEFORE THEIR BIRTH AND TO PROVIDE FOR THE POWERS AND DUTIES OF THE COMMISSION AND TO REQUIRE PRIVATE FUNDING FOR THE ESTABLISHMENT OF THIS MONUMENT.

Usually, we would just label this is pandering and move on without mention, but 33 out of 124 representatives is a healthy sample of support. It’s the latest in a flood of anti-abortion legislation, including a proposal for a 24-hour waiting period before abortions. That bill is expected to be debated next week.

SC is just a laugh a minute. Unemployment is heading towards double digits, but who cares?

1. Rise, Dumbfuckistan!
You can't fix your economy, you can't replace lost jobs, you can't make food safe, etc.
Oh, but you can do this! What a government! What a country!
ROFL.

who died in childbirth or due to a fatal pregnancy.

Never mind. There isn't enough room or material on this planet.

where abortion was illegal.

5. Okay, then how about a monument to the 18,000 Americans
who die every year because they can't afford health insurance? Idiots. They're nothing but a bunch of embryo worshippers. Once the baby is born it's on its own.

16. Surely, as soon as you put those words on the monument, ...
... it becomes a religious monument, and thus something the state has no business funding or displaying.

10. Not only are wingnuts illiterate, they don't give one shit about "babies"....
"unborn" or born. It's not a baby until it is born. It's a fetus or simply an embryo.

When the wingnuts vehemently opposed the expansion of SCHIP, they once again proved they could care less about children, born or otherwise. They routinely oppose pre and post natal programs like WIC and Medicaid. They abhor public education, access to birth control, and any other program that doesn't originate from the most evangelical churches. They could care less that some areas of the US have higher infant mortality rates than some 3rd world countries.

13. I am glad I got out
Though the misspelled monument is in Easton, PA, as it clearly states on the monument. Not sure about it today, but the KoC was not big in Columbia when I was growing up. We have had our own history with knightly fraternal organizations that wear strange garments and have freaky beliefs.

South Carolina is truly an idiocracy. Almost everyone with any brains who is able to leave it all behind does--Jesse Jackson and Vanna White, for example. I always thought it said something about James Brown that he actually chose to go back and live there.

20. I wonder, does the term "unborn" also apply
to those unlucky pre-fertilized zygotes that ended up disposed of in used tampons or maxi pads each month?

If not, then I also wonder why they hate pre-fertilized zygotes as well as the post-born babies...

26. Oh, and we haven't even considered the mass slaughter
of millions of sperm that don't get to fertilize an ovum, as hard as they try.

Imagine being that close, yet so far away. A virtual sperm lottery.

Only one winner (usually)...

the rest...left to die like battle-scarred salmon fighting and clawing their way upriver...except that the unlucky sperm have fought and died for nothing...

Life is cruel!

29. Nitpick alert--can we lay off the un-medical use of "fetus" and call 'em "embryos" instead?
since about 85% of elective abortions take place in the first trimester, when the being within is considered by the medical community as an "embryo", it bugs me when people refer to a "aborted fetus."

The vast majority actually aren't.

in front, like this: SC: Love the fetus, hate the child.

Yep. Works for me.
