Jindal Signals Louisiana May Not Take Stimulus Money
Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal, a potential 2012 GOP presidential candidate, has suggested his state may not be interested in all of the roughly $4 billion allotted to it in the economic stimulus package to be signed by President Obama today.

"We'll have to review each program, each new dollar to make sure that we understand what are the conditions, what are the strings and see whether it's beneficial for Louisiana to use those dollars," Jindal said, according to CBS affiliate WWLTV.

He and Hoover-Sanford are playing a game of chicken. I still haven't found another source besides MSNBC that says SC won't take the money.

come from?

22. I think Bloo means that those who didn't vote for Jindal aren't
"his" constituents. Like I don't consider myself as one of Bob Corker's constituents because he never does anything I feel represents me.

10. you know that's the truth,
I'd love to see any of these Gov's who are saying they won't take the money actually do it. Political suicide is just sometimes fun to watch.

15. Yup; just campaign talk. Watch him be temporarily unable to fulfill his duties and the
Lt. Gov. or SoS take the money--and for him to be "shocked" and "disturbed."

In the meantime, New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin says he'll take whatever the state turns down.

"There's many aspects of this from transportation to light rail systems to energy efficiency grants to CDGB money," said Nagin. "It should benefit the city of New Orleans significantly."

18. Ooo, Big Bobby trying to talk big and all.
I'm sure he'll find a way to justify it in his own little heart. Ever hear of a conservative turning down money? He's just posturing so he can claim later that he never wanted the stimulus plan.

27. He never said he wasn't going to take it.
He said he was going to examine the package to see what strings were attached to the money before he took it.

30. That's what he said he was going to do.
A lot of times federal money to the states has requirements, like highway money being tied to enforcing a national speed limit, or health care money being tied to standards for health care. States reject some of these from time to time, for different reasons. They don't meet the requirements, so they don't take the money.

Jindal is just trying to sound like John Wayne and get national attention by announcing this. States always examine the conditions before taking the money. Now and then states reject the money. Nothing new about this, but Jindal wants people to think he's special. He'll take the cash, or most of it. Maybe he'll reject something just to say he did. It's just normal political noise.
