The country needs a grand vision & a challenge equivalent to the moon landing.
We need more than a weak stimulus band-aid that will do little more than hopefully regain the old status quo. Probably a worthy candidate for this effort would be a sustained renewable energy project.

1. I don't think a bigger one would have had the support of the 3 republicans to get it passed.

I think.... (hoping) that Obama is spreading it out so that the sum is far more than the parts - eg stimulus, housing, banking then budget. I also suspect that once all these are done, there will be wealthy people ready to invest more than they are now, and that could also help.

2. "Science flys you to the moon. Religion flies you into buildings."
I saw that in a picture here on DU this morning.

It was a sign on the side of a bus in Great Britain.

3. Turns out that "every man for himself" doesn't make a very good call to action
We live in a social darwinist "devil take the hindmost" society. Where is there room for a "grand vision" in such a society?

7. Didn't George Carlin express that idea a decade or so ago?? - "How about a war on homelessness"?
.
.
.

something like that

It would sure take a heck of a lot less money than bombing the shit out of the Middle East

And maybe the World might regain some respect for the USA . .

Just my Canuk thots . . .

11. Wiping out poverty is the consequence of good policy, it's meaningless
an impossible as the primary goal.

our dependence on foreign oil really is, the Patriots and Nationalists would both be up in arms.

Yet how would a country whose people celebrate a culture of lies start such a thing?

20. Once a bridge or train is built they all get laid off.
Something that pays real dividends in the future is needed.
