George Bush Is Gone & Cat Stevens Was In Los Angeles Last Week .
Pinch yourselves: We've come a long way:

Barack and Michelle live in the White House.

And even Cat Stevens -- once humilitaed and brutally treated by George Bush's administration -- was here in Los Angeles last week finishing his video with Jesse Dylan.

Here's to Yusuf.

--------

A little news from Yusuf Islam (Cat Stevens)

"Yusuf was in Los Angeles last week to finish the editing of the Boots & Sand music video, and to make a unique contribution to the legacy of Sir Paul McCartney.

The Long and Winding Road was recorded by Yusuf at The Jim Henson Company Lot with Sir Paul’s tour band providing the backing. The session was a trip down memory lane as the studio was previously the home of A&M Records – where Yusuf, Carol King, The Carpenters and Herb Alpert used to meet and hang out. The history of the Lot goes back even further, being situated on the grounds of the film studio built by Charlie Chaplin in 1917. The track will be used on a future tribute album, with details to be announced. The music video for Boots & Sand is nearing completion, following Yusuf’s meeting with Jesse Dylan to finalise the editing." http://www.yusufislam.com/

2. I remain a fan....

Mandatory disclaimer for a minority of DUers or "poseurs""
Spare me the tirades (for those so inclined) about his comments re: the Salmon Rushdie fatwah. He has clarified that sufficient for me and I've never been inclined to lump all Muslims into the hate category--so don't even go there with me.

15. It's about time
I saw Cat in concert in Portland in the early '70s.

Now it's time to let Farley Mowat visit the US again.

I'm not quite so sure about Roman Polanski, though.

18. I personally think Polanski's fate should be up to his "victim" at this point.
She is in her 40s now, IIRC, and has totally moved on in life, unscathed and bearing him no ill will.

What a shitty place this blog is becoming.

He did not call for Salman Rushdie's murder.

You and George Bush have a lot in common.

Noted.

11. I guess Wikipedia is "shitty" too
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cat_Stevens'_comments_about_Salman_Rushdie
On February 21, 1989, Yusuf Islam addressed students at Kingston University in London about his conversion to Islam and was asked about the controversy in the Muslim world and the fatwa calling for Salman Rushdie's execution. He replied, "He must be killed. The Qur'an makes it clear - if someone defames the prophet, then he must die." <4>

Newspapers quickly denounced what was seen as Yusuf Islam's support for the assassination of Rushdie and the next day Yusuf released a statement saying that he was not personally encouraging anybody to be a vigilante,<1> and that he was only stating that blasphemy is a capital offense according to the Qur'an.

However on March 8, 1989, while speaking in London's Regents Park Mosque, Yusuf Islam was asked by a Christian Science Monitor reporter how he would "cope with the idea of killing a writer for writing a book." He is reported to have replied:

In Islam there is a line between let's say freedom and the line which is then transgressed into immorality and irresponsibility and I think as far as this writer is concerned, unfortunately, he has been irresponsible with his freedom of speech. Salman Rushdie or indeed any writer who abuses the prophet, or indeed any prophet, under Islamic law, the sentence for that is actually death. It's got to be seen as a deterrent, so that other people should not commit the same mistake again.
