I haven't played with Twitter in a while but I access it via the password I set up specifically for it.
Maybe this has to do with posting options such as posting from your cellphone or email account?

just my email and a password like many other sites. My password there isn't the same as the one for my email.
ETA: I just went and signed up for a new account since I've been meaning to for a different purpose then my other one which is for business. Now I see what you're talking about. :)
When you get to the part where it asks for your email password there's a link under "Continue" that says "Skip This Step". I had skipped it for my other account and did so for this one. :) It's just to "help" you by getting your contacts to add IF you want to... I certainly wasn't comfortable with it so didn't and I'd recommend just adding "friends" in manually. :)
