Republicans Hoping For Failure

With the ink barely dry on the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, the Party of No continues to root for the continuing collapse of the U.S. economy. And they're not even being subtle about it.

Over the next few days, 30 first-term House Democrats will hold events in their districts highlighting how spending there can protect and create jobs and otherwise benefit those harmed by the downturn.

Republican leaders moved just as quickly to portray the bill as a boondoggle. Republican aides said they would seize on every instance of potential abuse as a way of stirring public doubt about the measure.

So, while Democrats highlight how the bill will benefit their constituents, the Republicans will do their best to undermine the public's confidence in the economy and their government. And they will no doubt be wearing flag pins on their lapels as they do it.

And all that crazy talk about stimulating the economy and creating jobs? RNC Chair Michael Steele gleefully predicts:

I’m telling the party leadership around the country, don’t believe the hype. There will be a slight uptick, it will flat-line, and it will continue to go down.

Or so he hopes.

But what if the Republican's worst-case scenario happens and the economy turns around? Don't worry, says House Republican whip, Rep. Eric Cantor ... the American people are stupid:

The American public is not going to be waking up one morning four years from now and say: ‘What a great economy! It all goes back to that vote that the Democrats passed on the stimulus bill.’

So says the weasel being hailed as the "new face of the Republican Party."
