wow. Fred Phelps BANNED from the UK!
Edited on Thu Feb-19-09 11:43 AM by Mari333
A homophobic American cleric who runs a website called God Hates Fags has been banned from Britain by the home secretary, Jacqui Smith.

Fred Phelps had vowed to come to Britain with his daughter Shirley to picket a school play in Basingstoke, Hampshire, promoting tolerance for gay people. The play, The Laramie Project, depicts the murder of a homosexual teenager, Matthew Shepard, in the Wyoming town in 1998 and will be staged tomorrow evening at Queen Mary's College.

Phelps, who runs the Primitive Baptist Westboro church in Topeka, Kansas – most of whose congregation are members of his family, including his 13 children – has bought a small plot of land in Laramie on which he plans to build a memorial celebrating the murder, despite local opposition.

He's found on a Terrorist Watch list in the US, and denied re-entry.

13. It's not like they were really coming anyway
I suspect they had no intention of travelling to the UK: they simply claimed that for the publicity. They've done this before, with other destinations. Quite what they get out of this, I don't know, other than feeding off the resulting hate.

He tried to sneak in to protest at the funeral of the guy killed on the bus.

We sent him packing.

38. Yes, his band of terror-makers was refused entry into Canada last year.
No one seems to remember that. No other country wants them on their own soil, but in the US they are considered a protected species.

Plus he has his followers that don't seem financially independent.

Anyone know?

Good for Britain though

Nearly every adult in his family is an attorney. Many have been disbarred but a couple still practice law and if you drive by him and cross your eyes, he sues you.

28. Only thing I can think is to build a small wall around whatever he creates
this is a joke that he would be allowed to build this. Hell why not just let the KKK put a statue of a burning cross in the middle of a town square. I realize this is all free speach but shouldn't the voices of the majority have some say in what they want and not want cluttering their town?

29. That's a fantastic idea and maybe it could take the shape of .....

....angel wings!

I'm sure you've seen these folks before...they show up with huge angel wings on and stand in front of the vile, disgusting signs that Phelps and his family brandish.

At the event I went to, they were there. Silent, elegant, gracious. When you tried to speak to them, they didn't want to talk. They were solemn but steady.

So, great idea!!!...build a wall around their disgusting hate...in the form of angel wings!!!08)

I'd carry it out if I had the skills.

40. As disgusting as he is, he deserves his rights of free speech.
Granted, what a foreign country does with respect to its visa entry requirements is their prerogative, but here in the states, I am against any law that diminishes an individual's right to freedom of expression (even if their words and ideas are as blatantly insane as Phelp's).

41. I agree with Britain's
decision he has no right to protest there. But this highlights one of the things I find least progressive about European countries, in general, is there tendency to restrict free speech in the name of "tolerance". Earlier this year a Dutch MP was charged for "hate speech" becuase he wrote an anti Muslim book and comments. It's much better to have these people out in the open.

42. Exactly. other than inciting public violence
there should essentially be no infringement on free speech. Hell, even slander and libel lawsuits are extremely difficult to win (as they should be).
