4. I have an even uglier one for you:
last week, at peterson afb, a couple of jerks complained about president obama's picture on a banner for presidents' day, so the banner was removed (funny, none of them complained when der chimpenfuhrer's pic was included). this is what one of them said (and I want to know HOW we can get this bastard out of the military--because I sure as HELL don't want to be paying HIS salary)

. . . . . .

One can hope those who complained were simply bored, or harbored intense political opposition to Obama. Unfortunately, it's a fact that Obama's race was at the heart of some objections. A cashier said one military retiree made no secret about it, in expressing his concern.

But don't take the cashier's word for it. The Gazette received an e-mail from a man who identified himself as a Marine Corps veteran. It said (profanity redacted by Gazette): "first of all he's not qualified to be president,,alien,,,kenya you get the picture second of all: he's a useless pile of c-p... elected by the scum of our society."

Asked by e-mail if he cared to elaborate, the man wrote: "I don't think any further amplification is necessary,,the useless ni-er is destroying the economy,,,a day at a time,,, and ignorant a-wipes like yourself are either in accord with him or you just don't give a good husky c-p... either way you're f---ed,,,the end is upon us,,,6 mths to a yr, and the end will be starring us in the face,,,actually, I mean you,,,I'm getting the f-k out,,,with lots of $$, so s-k d-k and suffer,,,just do it quietly,,have some pride,,,if nothing else..."

. . . . .

7. Oh, good Lord, that IS even uglier...the rotten corpse of racism in America is turning out
to be Undead, isn't it? We thought we'd driven a stake through its heart in November, but here it is, alive as ever, stalking around in its stinking, tattered rags, grunting like its moronic, mouth-breathing proponents. It's ALIVE!

Mrs R volunteers three days a week at the local Soup Kitchen, and STILL hears racist comments about our President (apparently from people who don't know that she's half African)...I cannot give her enough credit for the fact that she doesn't go ballistic on them. I wouldn't be able to have such restraint.

Dammit.

17. When someone portrays an African-American as a monkey, it's fucking racist. Period. No arguments,
no excuses, no bullshit, no evasion. There was NO "hidden intent" there. There was NO "comparison to the actual writers of the bill" there.

Just Simon-pure, naked racism, in such a blatant manner that I never though I'd see in the 21st century.

The cartoonist was calling our President a monkey. Because our President is black. End of discussion.

understand why I and a few others saw it the one way, and others immediately saw it the other.
There was/is nothing diabolical about my...prolonged "reasoning"(?)

Again, I KNOW it is racist if it is about the President. And I see how it could be about the president, just as you explained. I think the cartoonist left himself just enough plausible deniability to think he could get away with it, by saying what I at first saw/read, because he IS diabolical. And an ass. And I am not defending him or the cartoon. Everyone was looking to immediately jump on anyone for not seeing it their way, while ignoring what I/we saw. Not a biggie, just wondering "why".

Again, thanks - I appreciate what you had/have to say!

And, this gentleman here was the 1st to explain 'why' it could mean/meant Obama, when I was involved in the disussion. There about 50 threads on this topic, but in seeing Redstone's anger at people who saw it as I did, I figured I would try to explain my initial take, which was articulated in (only) 2 of yesterday's threads.

Edited on Thu Feb-19-09 04:06 PM by jmg257
IMMEDITELY, IF the cartoonist had said "now we have to get someone new to SIGN the next stimulus bill". NO defense of that would be possible.

He left himself a way out, but too many people tie Obama in with writing the bill, and they immediately see it clearly as representing him.

And now knowing what the drawer(?) is all about, I would not defend this either, it is at the least offensive in many ways, and because I believe he was intentionally...skating that line(?) - which means he was being racist.

30. Here's what I don't get - regardless of context, it ain't funny. At all.
Even if we take it at face value, in the recent chimpanzee attack, we have the following:

1. One person, maimed horribly, fighting for her life.
2. This person's best friend, who owned the chimp, dealing with the above.
3. Chimp's owner had recently lost her husband, and her daughter was killed in an accident.
4. Chimp's owner claims chimp "was like a child to her" and, after dealing with all of the above, she sees her "child" shot dead.

There is nothing, NOTHING, even remotely funny about the situation. Adding a racist bent to an incredibly sad story is a cherry on top of a douchebag sundae.

I would add that in NY, the Post is considered about one level up from the Weekly World News. Rupert Murdoch (Fox News) owns it, and its target audience is Archie Bunker. When they publish a cartoon of white cops shooting a chimp, they know exactly what they're doing.

81. You know something, the dead ape looks to me in the style
of a much older cartoon. I bet you anything, he lifted it. Someone who knows what they're doing could probably find it.

Do you see the dif in style between the cops and the ape?

58. I sent an email to the post, this is a copy
While I do support the principle of free speech, it has become obvious to me that corporate media will go to any length to promote fascism. The inclusion of the "dead monkey cartoon" in your publication is obviously racist and directly proves that it is the intention of your organization to support and promote the assissination of President Obama. It is my hope that Federal Agents will take your published threat seriously and begin a thourough investigation.

Please submit a list of those who advertise in your shoddy rag so an internet boycot can begin.

Bring back the fairness doctrine, and send Rupert Murdock back to the dark ages.

my fault), and that's ALL they care about.

Disgusting, but true.

63.  Hmmm. Well, considering President Obama is black,
the cartoon is not appropriate and should not have been published for obvious reasons.

No question about it, for a number of reasons -- not the least of which is because there's the whole BART train shooting of an unarmed black passenger in Oakland (by a white cop), still very much in the news.

However, let's be honest and think about this objectively ... let's examine the cartoon for a second without taking race into account.

Political artists almost always tie the issue they've been assigned to cartoon .. this time: (stimulus bill controversy), into a recent news event.

Think about comedians like Letterman -- they try to tie a news event to celebrities and issues. People get it, because it's a fresh on their mind.

The Republicans, with the exception of only three politicians in all of the house and senate, voted NO on the stimulus package. It was a huge nightmare for weeks and weeks.

So that was the idea. Associating the stimulus fiasco with "shooting" it down by the overwhelming number of Republicans.... It just so happens cops had to shoot down a chimp recently.

Perfect! But it wasn't perfect, considering black people are stereotypically associated with apes by a lot of racists and bigots.

Never-the-less, the cartoonist decided to use the chimp as the object of the shooting.

Keep in mind, theoretically, the artist could have drawn a GOP elephant standing next to the smoldering remains of that plane wreckage in suburban Buffalo and said the same thing -- but Jesus ... can you imagine how that would have played out?!?

Ape standing next to the rubble saying, "they'll have to find someone else to write the next stimulus bill." :wtf:

Instead, the artist chose the current event that killed nobody as opposed to 150.

Again, I don't think the cartoon below should have been published because it can easily be, and has been, interpreted as racist.

However I think the cartoon is clever and creative on its own. I do.

Clever, creative cartoon....Bad idea to have published it because of the racial overtones.

65. "Clever and creative?" I gotta disagree with you on this one. Even without the "racial overtones,"
making light of such a horrible situation (see the post from "mikeytherat" upthread) is just low-class.

73. Alright, why is it that nobody had a problem with posting
photographs of chimps to imitate George W Bush?

Can't you argue it's inappropriate to use a photo of a chimp in mocking fashion because of the fact racists and bigots associate primates with black people?

Where do you draw the line?

75. That's like arguing that calling a man "Nancy" to deride him is okay
because some women are named "Nancy". You and I know those are two completely different contexts.

80. That example doesn't work because neither of
those names are used to slam minorities.

And again, I've already said the cartoon is not appropriate for publication due to perceived racial overtones.

I say perceived because we haven't heard from the artist and don't know what his/her intentions were and whether he/she is a bigot.

been figured this way for hundreds of years but OBAMA has been for at least the last year. Remember the monkey doll? Remember the t-shirt? The artist has made his "intentions" as clear as possible.

ETA: And every time the Dad on "Everyone Loves Raymond" calls one of his boys "Nancy", it's a homophobic slur, btw.

69. You can't consider this cartoon outside of race because it was made
in the tradition of racist cartoons. That's a nonstarter.

Here's one of Lincoln, who was put into that tradition when he signed the Emancipation Proclamation:

This genre is ALL about race.

76. I already said it's inappropriate for publication because of the
racial overtones.

But from an art standpoint, I think it's a clever play on the situation.

Art is controversial sometimes and it's open to many interpretations.

You obviously have yours and I have mine.

78. If it were a dead "effete" man and the caption was
"They'll have to find some other cocksucker to write the next bill", would you feel as good about focusing on the word play? That's the level of this "cleverness".

Because "art" is controversial sometimes?

67. Good God.
Why the f*ck is the NY Post allowed to print that? Aside from perhaps raising the idea of murdering Obama - remember the psycho who shot up a Tennessee church because of Michael Savage saying liberals are worse than scum - what purpose does that cartoon serve?

There should be fines leveled for that.

83. This is business as usual for this cartoonist.

He routinely puts out the most offensive, crude and ugly cartoons.

You should have seen the one of Caroline Kennedy when it appeared that the Governor was not going to pick her for the senate seat.
It showed Caroline stuck in a car in a body of water with Patterson on a bridge watching her drown.

He is despicable.

89. Redstone it is racist and ugly
and I for one am offended by it.

The way I look at it though....is the scab of racism is being peeled back and many Americans don't like what they see. They can't hide their eyes and close their ears and pretend that they don't see the racist shit anymore.

Now that more Americans not just Black Americans, Gay Americans, Latino Americans, Liberal Americans, Women, generally anyone who does not tote the Neocon Racist line. Limpballs, this (wannabe)comic, Hannity, Coultergeist - All of them are approaching the line in the sand of no return, they are advocating the unthinkable and they think that they are just providing entertainment. Again this is beyond entertainment....

This comic is in it's nature similar to the racist comics from the early 1900's in America towards blacks. The 1930's comics of Nazi Germany and the list goes on.....

We need to pay attention and start filing complaints with the DOJ and other legal institutions that log such complaints. We should use the laws that these idiots created against them....they are advocating terroristic type threats and we as citizens should report it.
