loves to say a bunch of words without really saying anything. What is it with people who think that the more words you use, the smarter you sound?

It makes perfect sense that only one site would have technical difficulties. If your going to accuse Hardball of being racist through technical difficulties, then your crazy.

31. I do have a suggestion, though. Maybe you have a friend who can |
|
listen to him and translate into one syllable words for you. Then perhaps you might be able to figure out why Buchanan is an ignorant bigot and why Dyson is beloved and sought after by people with functioning frontal lobes, by hosts from Charlie Rose to Bill Haher to Bill Moyers and what you have been missing all this time.

You like to use words that really don't mean anything. Pseudointellectual pap like "racialist."
So what's the difference between you and Dyson?
Hmmmmm.

25. I've explained this already, but I'll do it again. |
|
Just so it's clear: It's not about individual words. It's about using a bunch of words to cloak the fact that there is no coherent point to anything you're saying. That is Dyson in a nutshell.
As for the word "racialist," aside from posting the definition (which didn't help you) and suggesting that you look it up yourself (which apparently hasn't happened yet) I can't do much more of the work for you.

28. I think everything he said had a coherent point. |
|
I thought you were arguing that why say something in 20 words when you can say it in ten. He says it in 20, but what he says still makes a coherent point.
For example, did you see what he said about the reason why blacks have black churches?

29. I'm asking about the double standard. |
|
I'm wondering why you're criticizing a black guy for going on at length without having a coherent point when you yourself are doing the same thing, and in fact repeating yourself.
I'm aware of your definition of the word racialist. Dyson's a professor of African American studies, so it makes sense he's interested in racial issues. Why you've chosen to use the word "racialist" and as a perjorative is beyond me, as is why in a fight between Dyson and Buchanan, you've chosen to criticize Dyson.

30. I think the difficult thing with Dyson |
|
is that he tends to use the jargon of his field even when he's speaking to a non-academic audience.
My first thought when I read your post was, "Hm. He makes perfect sense to me." Then I realized that of course he did, because I use similar jargon in my line of work.
It's a good reminder to members of any profession that even though we've been trained in the language of our particular field most of the rest of the world isn't. It's our job to cross that barrier.
That said, I think Dyson is a frickin' genius, and I'm always excited when he comes on TV because I want to hear what he has to say. I missed him this time because I was watching the local news. Guess I gotta catch him on the Hardball repeat in an hour or so...

33. Dyson doesn't talk down to people and that's mistaken for something else. |
|
People like me who write poetry love listening to him because he's all the time synthesizing the lexicons of a bunch of different cultures. I guess it gets to be too much if you don't like words.

34. He doesn't talk down. I agree. And I like that about him. |
|
Then again, I'm a social scientist, so I don't think twice about what Dyson means when he uses the language of sociology, which is what I figured the OP was talking about.
I'm also a fan of his polyglot cultural lexicon. It makes his language sing a bit, IMO. I think we'd all do well to take on a little more of that. :hi:
