Help! I need a good comeback for a fundie cousin's political comment -- please!
She's the type who inserts God into everything she says, but the main issue is what she said that evidently applies to Obama getting elected.

There are so many creative minds here, I'd like to have a good comeback that is witty & tactful.

She's been searching for a much-needed job & had requested prayers for a particular position she hoped to get earlier this week. She didn't get it & she wrote this message to inform everyone to keep praying.

Here's the part that needs a good comeback:

"The job was offered to someone else so I am still on the job hunt. It is even harder now since this latest fiasco occurred in
our nation.
I am confident of two things: 1. The Lord will take care of us (He'll have to be even more creative of this than what I can imagine) and..."

Thanks!

3. Share with her the 13th chapter of the Book of Romans
Particularly St. Paul's sentiments that the civil authorities are appointed by God and are deserving of a good Christian's obedience and support. Fundies like Romans 13 when their guy is in the seat of power; they like to forget it entirely when someone of whom they disapprove is sitting in the driver's seat.

4. If she considers Obama's election as a fiasco, God simply has decided
to ignore her prayers. Quite simple, really.

6. For a group who proclaim faith in an all powerful God who has a plan
for everything in everyone's life - they sure don't show much faith when they question the plan God decided on (latest fiasco).

It stopped my southern baptist preacher from sending me those sort of emails. Fortunately he was dumb enough to send it with a whole slew of people in the Reply All field (or maybe it really was God's plan!)

8. How about this?
So, you believe that God/"The Lord" will take care of you?

How about you apply to the Vatican for a temporary tide-me-over loan? See how that goes.

But most organized religions are in the "up is down" mode these days, it seems.

9. I would suggest...
...simply coming back and innocently agreeing with her.

"Yes, this economic fiasco the Bush administration saddled us all with will certainly make things hard on your job search. Let's hope the congressional Republicans stop obstructing Obama's efforts to fix it."

Or something similar.

27. Maybe so...
...but sense of humor or not if she still identifies sympathetically with Bush and you don't just criticize but really obviously mock him she's likely to perceive that as an attack on her as well by association since you're not just expressing disagreement with her current worldview, you're expressing contempt for it.

Get her to agree with you... then go to the Bush mockery. Then you're only mocking Bush and not also targetting her own opinions by association.

she wasn't referring to the economic crisis? either way, maybe you could remind her that the president just got the stimulus bill passed which means more jobs. you could mention that gawd must have been in charge of seeing who ended up in the WH because if it had been mccain we'd still be even further up shitcreek than we are after 8 years of disaster.

16. How about
Sometimes God says no...it seems he said no to "Republicans" and he said no to you, a Republican supporter. Dang, God can really do slap downs, can't he? Keep trying, if you finally see the light, God might say yes next time when you apply for a job if you repent your going against him when he decided Obama deserved the job as President of the US.

BTW, I'm not religious, so I really really don't believe God "chose" Obama.

25. Send her this prayer ...
Edited on Thu Feb-19-09 07:38 PM by ColbertWatcher
Dear Lord;

Please allow me to benefit from the nation that I was born in, lived in and payed taxes to for my entire life. Do not hold my femaleness against me. I know that women shouldn't work, but I feel that I have something to contribute not just to my family but to the world at large.

I will be willing to do just about anything I am qualified for (you know my resumé!) but in these trying times I wouldn't mind working for 60-70% of what my male colleagues will be earning (my political party has told me this is all I deserve).

Also Lord, please find a job that will allow me to have affordable healthcare. Right now I have none and I do not want any of my taxes going to universal healthcare because if someone can't work they don't deserve to be healthy.

One more thing Lord--while I have you--I'd prefer to have a non-union job because that would guarantee me ideological purity while not guaranteeing me anything else.

It would be helpful for me, my family and my community if you could bless my job search,

Yours truly, etc, etc.

(EDITED TO FIX)

33. Woohoo!
"It's just a shame that some in our government who are part of the good-ol'-boy network are so corrupt that they'd stoop so low as to have the Supreme Court put a ne'er-do-well into the White House just to please his father...it sure backfired, didn't it? On us."

I haven't made up my mind how I'm going to answer her e-mail, but after reading it again, I'm pretty sure she meant the economy...which, as those of us who have been paying attention, is the fault of Bush & his rubber-stamping cronies in Congress!

37. Prayers don't get you a job. Skills and experience do.
I've yet to see a job description that says "ye must be saved" or "preference given to those washed in the blood of the lamb".

And what "fiasco" is she talking about? Obama has been on the job a whole month.

Fiascos take time. Like about 8 years.

39. Tell her you don't think God can "be even more creative of this"
than even SHE can imagine.

Tell her you think God is a one-hit-wonder that spent all of his creativity on creating THE UNIVERSE. He really hasn't done anything as good since then.

40. This may be splitting hairs theologically but
can one really petition the Lord with prayer? I would tell her that if:

1) She believed God is all powerful, all-knowing, knows the beginning and the end,
2) He has a plan
3) His plan is infallible, and he already knows how it will turn out before it happens
4) Then her petitioning the Lord with prayer is a bit presumptuous on her part because her life, and all her activities and experiences, by default have been essentially preordained according to his plan. She should respect his will and praise him for his allowing her to do his will, not asking him to change his will for her (i.e. "dear Lord give me a job").
5) Also, if you could petition the Lord with prayer, shouldn't she be asking for the poor children of Africa (etc) to get food and medicine, rather than to have him help her with her selfish wants?
